Voices that 'do it for you'

What's Hot
Just watching a recording of the recent Eagles documentary and marvelling at Don Henley's voice, particularly on 'Heart of the Matter' from his solo career.

There are some people who get described as having the kind of voice where they could 'sing the phone-book' and move you.

For me these include Paul Buchanan from The Blue Nile, Peter Gabriel and John Martyn.

Yours?

None of you will know this guy, but I am blown away by the voice of Christian singer David Phelps. Absolutely sublime with great power and range. His material is very 'christian' so not to many people's tastes.

The other voice I love is that of Steve Balsamo, and in particular his amazing rendition of 'Gethsemane' from Jesus Christ Superstar.

Have to agree with Don Henley, lovely sound to his singing.

Some already mentioned here and they have a similar tonality-Don Henley and Timothy B. Schmit of The Eagles rank very highly for me followed by Paul Carrack and Glen Tilbrook.
Soulful stuff- Marvin Gaye, Michael McDonald, Lewis Taylor & Connor Reeves
Rock stuff - Richie Kotzen, Myles Kennedy, Sammy Hagar, Steve Perry and Steve Overland (FM)
Not many female voices came to mind but Eva Cassidy & Christine Collister are great.
EDIT:Forgot to mention Steve Lukather of Toto on their slowies, ok, ballads

    Five I can think of...

    Debbie Harry
    Matt Monro
    Karen Carpenter
    Lloyd Cole
    Shirley Manson

I really had to think hard about it though - apart from Debbie ;) - I tend to listen to the song rather than the voice. If anything it's more the other way round - there are several artists (a couple mentioned here already) who I might quite like lyrically if I could actually listen to them properly, but can't get past their voices.

I've always thought Joni Mitchell was an astonishing singer, capable of such subtlety. And Diana Krall for jazz is just superb.

Sia Furler was great on the Zero 7 stuff. I believe there was a rumour that she was the daughter of Colin Hay (Men At Work). Just looked it up and seems he's either her uncle, her God-Father or a close friend of the family, but not her dad.

As we're talking about Antipodeans, can I add Neil Finn as another good singer. Great song-writer too!

  • Loads of greats listed already.
I would add thom Yorke, and neil tennant.  Maybe dusty Springfield too.
Don't know why but aside from the two men mentioned above it is mainly female voices that 'do it for me'
