Not a recent release but I went to see the Nick Cave "20,000 Days on Earth" film last night (local bookshop does a film club, usually arty or stuff with subtitles).

Brilliant (but staged) "day in the life" type thing with some recording/live/rehearsal footage, plus some sort of therapy session, going through old photos....and chats with Ray Winstone, Blixa and Kylie as Nick drives them around Brighton.

Quite sad to see a brief clip of him sat with his two boys eating pizza (one of them tragically died earlier this year).

Spy Melissa McCarthy, Jason Statham and Jude Law

really fancied a sci fi film last night but couldnt think of anything decent and ended up with this.

McCarthy plays a CIA analyst/agent who goes undercover etc etc, pretty standard Bond style plot with a villain doing some nasty stuff to threaten the world. At 2hrs 10 its a wee bit long for a film of this type but it has some genuinely funny stuff in it, good performances from McCarthy and especially Jason Statham who just reminded me of the kid at school who'd done everything but actually nothing. Very sweary and not one for the kids despite it looking a bit family friendly from the poster.

grave encounters (mockumentory in the style of the blair witch project e.t.c) a ghost hunting program spends the night at an abandoned mental institution.get more than they bargained for. i enjoyed it 7.5/10

    Insidious 3.

Very formulaic and relies too much on jump scares.Saved only by the very pretty female lead.

The Water Diviner. Russell Crowe goes to Turkey to bring home his sons who were lost at Gallipoli. Surprisingly good.

    San Andreas.

I have to say, at times it was the biggest cliche I have seen ever. Utterly dreadful but so bad it was compelling.

I think they blew their budget on Dwayne The Rock Johnson.

@racefaceec90   Classics one and all.  Well sort of.

I meant to watch some horror movies for Halloween yesterday but didn't have time in the end.  I just saw a bit of The Cabin in the Woods on TV while I was doing the ironing.

Suffragette. Ok, but production or whatever made it look more like a TV drama than a cinema movie. Sorry, but only 5/10 for this one.

    Bloody awful remake.

But if you like Imogen Poots, check out Green Room, possibly coming to your local multiplex next year.  It's excellent.

Witchfinder General on the TV a couple of nights ago.

A thoroughly nasty study of violence and corruption in the name of religion.

Still great, despite some rather dated acting and effects (bad fake blood especially) by modern standards.

    Mad Max Fury Road.

Made it to fifty eight minutes and turned it off.Utter pants and so disappointing.

    Not recommended.

Wow .. I just turned up here to sing it's praises. :D

Basically, I was all ready to hate it - my son wanted to watch it and I was a bit meh. Tom Hardy is in everything these days, I opened my cupboard the other day and there he was apparently studying my jumper for a new role...

    anyway.

I thought it was brilliant, had touches of the first films - cutting frames to speed up the action (unlike previously when this was for "realism" in stunts, this time it gave an edgy feel to the action scenes. The imagery was wonderfully in keeping with Thunderdome without the guys wandering about with their bums hanging out.

New societies, caste systems, rituals and ridiculousness, epic scenes, grotesqueness seen in 80s horror, really Australian big-bosses - I reckon it got the whole Max thing really well.

It's an action movie so lets not argue about not dying of blood-loss, physics and dimensions stuff that the film clearly falls down on

Mel Gibson must be cursing the Jewish Media Conspiracy, when Tom Hardy does Lethal Weapon with Cuba Gooding Junior, he'll be a ghost! ;)

A sig-nat-eur? What am I meant to use this for ffs?! Is this thing recording?

The Vincent Price one? Great film. I love that era of horror films, especially any of the Hammer/Amicus ones with VP in : Pit and the Pendulum, Masque of the Red Death, Tomb of Ligiea etc. Price was the consummate horror villain IMO. Those films always used to be on telly on Friday nights about 11. Perfect viewing after a night in the pub, together with a takeaway Chinese or curry. :)

Yes. The important thing is that it's not actually a horror - it's (sort of, although not very accurate) historical. It's just that the things people do in the name of religion are frequently horrible. Price gives a non-typical very controlled but thoroughly evil performance - apparently he fell out badly with the director and spent most of the filming in a state of barely controlled fury, which may have helped.

Michael Reeves - very talented director, died tragically young.

  • I loved the Poe stories that Price stared in. Brilliant films. Haven't seen Witchfinder General for ages, but I did once work with a man called Matthew Hopkins.
