@TheBlueWolf  I'd have probably given it 6/10 but it would be boring if we all liked the same things!  Lots of people would never even watch a horror movie....

  • Not for the first time, I watched "The Deer Hunter" last night.

Uncomfortable in places but a classic too. 8/10

  • Hell or high water:- 8/10.  A sparse, gritty modern western.  Jeff bridges is excellent and a nearly retired Texas ranger  hunting down a pair of bank robbing brothers who are doing all they can to make enough money to keep their land.  One brother is relatively calm, but the other is unpredictable and dangerous.

Bad Santa 2:- 4/10.  I liked the original, there's no other film like it so I was looking forward to number 2, even though I knew it wouldn't match up.  Unfortunately there is little story and it's just puerile gag after puerile gag.  Some are funny but I can't help thinking their only plan was to stoop lower and lower in order to get a few laughs, rather than writing some kind of story.  Worth a watch if it happens to be on TV

Close encounters:- 8/10.  Can't remember which cut it was, the one where you don't see inside the mother ship, like Spielberg intended.  Considering its age, it doesn't look bad, the effects don't try to do too much which stops it ageing too much, the aliens at the end look a bit wonky but all in all this is a classic.  I like the vibe of the film and the benign atmosphere the lights in the sky create.

  • Star Wars the Force Awakens. I enjoyed it at the cinema but watching it on tv it's a series of minor annoyances, although lovely to see a bit of Puzzlewood.

    normality will be restored

  • Whiplash.
I'm not sure that I really engaged with it but I can see it in terms of performance and film making as something above the norm.

A thoroughly brilliant film I have absolute NO intention of ever watching again.

Not much of the gear, even less idea.

Whiplash is one of those films where I realised how good it was based on how much I thought about it afterwards.  There are many, many films which pass the time pleasantly enough but 24 hours later I've forgotten everything about them.

Yes, I think that's proving to be fairly true. If nothing else I am intending to listen to some Buddy Rich in the next couple of days.

Dead Snow 2. Extremely gory, completely OTT but still somehow manages to be funny.

Not by any means a bad film, but it is the thing that first made me aware of the horror that is "Mustang Sally"....

And looking at the soundtrack listing, I don't think I could bear to watch it now after hearing so many of those songs tortured and murdered on the X Factor, BGT etc for the last 15 years.

  • Tonight's ironing brought to you by Dad's Army. Not at all funny and I'm quite irritated that you get to meet Elizabeth.
