Led Zeppelin - The ultimate rock band
Muse - Huge sound and brilliant bass lines
The Jam - My approach to rock bass is all about Bruce Foxton
Sly & The Family Stone - Provided Larry would lend me his thumbs

  • Them Crooked Vultures would be my top spot, some of JPJ's lines are awesome.

Otherwise, my de facto choice of the Foo's would take top spot.

The Foos is a good choice as in all the bands I listed they would get worse as a result of my playing bass for them wheres I'm confident I'm a better bass player than Nate Mendel.

U2, definitely. I look a bit like Adam Clayton on a bad day and I can probably play bass almost as well as him so I reckon I'd fit in quite well :).

You get to use any gear you want, not have to carry any of it, and get paid the GDP of a small country, what's not to like? Apart from standing behind Bono, possibly.

Some kind of energetic pop-punk band in the Blink-182 vein - fun, not difficult, and plenty of scope for adding little licks and fills in to keep things interesting. I hope to one day approach being as good at doing this as Matt Freeman from Rancid, who is ridiculous.

Playing with some kind of 70s rock band would be cool too - think John Entwistle, John Deacon, etc. I'm not called John though, which may be a setback. Playing with Rage Against the Machine must be awesome, that'd be cool to have a go at.

While I am a big fan of metal, I don't think I'd like playing bass in the majority of metal bands - I listen to lots of the music but rarely, if ever, learn the bass parts, because they're mostly either really boring, or far too difficult, or both. My favourite metal bassists I can think of are Cliff Burton, Peter Steele and Steve Harris, no-one else really captures my imagination most of the time.

Have to be The Who or Jeff Beck.  And yes, I know I'd have to give them time to come up to speed but........

Janes Addiction or Living Colour for choice.

That said my current favourite bassline is 'Leaders Of The Free World' by Elbow, so slinky, so greasy, so dirty

Anybody remember a NWOBHM band called More? Several people told me I looked like their bass player so I think that's a gig that has been waiting for me for 30 years. I like John McCoy's bass playing but he isn't very technical and he gets to play with Bernie Torme so that would be a good gig. Playing bass behind Dick Dale would be pretty awesome. For Hollie Cook as I slightly love her and it would be good to work up some reggae bass chops. And obviously U2 for the reasons stated above, all of which would overcome me not actually liking their music.

At various times that's a list of bands I have looked like I wanted to be in (with the exception of Parliament and pre ToP Crue, natch)
