Good job I don't live close to Thomann (or MusicStore). That way I can tell myself these must be shite because they're so cheap, and I can't try them first...

Just been looking through the Thomman website and this Axl Les Paul Junior style guitar caught my eye.I've been gassing for a cheap Junior for a while and this seems to fit the bill.Set neck for only £91.

Anyone have any experience of them?

Even if all the hardware were shit, some of these are incredible mod platforms. I'm sorely tempted to get one....

It could be that the woods, fingerboard material, construction, fret wire and finish are too...   :-S

  • The basses have been getting a lot of love over at basschat.

Didn't @niallmo buy a couple of their six string efforts too?

I didn't realize that some of them use Wilkinson pickups (...ok not amazing pickups but certainly not crap either for £78)

I'm guessing that these are going to be fairly identical to the Vintage (JHS) guitars?

The Slah Les Paul certainly looks identical to my vintage V100 Paradise spec wise. Including the pickups and straplocks.

If anyone buys one it would be interesting to see the two either side by side.

    Same factory for sure !

An LPJr for less than a ton, Christ* on A Bike, I've just bought 2, A Melody Maker and a GSP, but if id known about this one in the link below I'd have taken a chance, Mahogany set neck and body, even if the hardware is shit, its bound to be less quality Mahogany, but a £ton? Someone buy one and mod the tits off it, it must be worth a punt, i would but I have no more vital organs to sell! *Other religious icon are available.... http://www.thomann.de/gb/axl_al_790_wo_1216_jr.htm Paul

Yeah that'd be my feeling. I've never been blown away by any of the Wilkinson pickups I've tried (well, the stacked P90s on the Vintage Advance AV6 were pretty nice), but they're normally at least decent and normally easily good enough not to need to be swapped straight away, and really don't normally need to be swapped unless you really want to. As you said, on a guitar as cheap as that, having even "decent" pickups is pretty good going. I've tried far dearer guitars with far worse pickups than "decent".

As I said above, I haven't tried them, though- none of that matters if the guitar is terrible.

That's a good point. Obviously you can't say for sure, but it wouldn't be the first rebrand Harley Benton has done, either (Joyo pedals, Epi Valve Junior, etc.).

If they are... that's one heck of a deal.

The Vintage (JHS) stuff is usually Mahogany bodies for the Gibson clones and Alder for the fenders. These HB's seem to be predominantly basswood bodies across the board with the exception of the Tele. Still could be the same factory though.
