After meeting up with @Travisthedog I am now the proud owner of an H&K Puretone.

It's a bit of a flight into the unknown for me as I've used Fender amps pretty much forever and so something with EL34s is frankly a bit scary. Although it's a class A and not very "Marshally" by all accounts. Haven't had a go with it yet, but I'll report back when I have.

Finding out Nile Rogers uses an EL84 based amp has opened my mind to the fact that funky sounds might not only be the preserve of 6L6 based amps.

Nice, did you trade your Supersonic for it or do you still have it?

  • I am after one, yeah.  Tried one recently and it definitely seems to be the amp for me.

    They are very good amps.

They have a couple of weird features, but there aren't many amps about that can do what they do.

  • Just need to find one a little further north I think.

  • I think you'll like the H&K mate

The least EL34 sounding EL34 amp you'll ever hear

Nice to meet you mate anyway!

I gave it a little play this morning at very low volume.
Very impressed with the clean tones.

Hope you are equally delighted with the Supersonic.

Cool amp. You know that with a different amp voicing your pedal search will start once again ;)

Nice one and there's a whole new "Clean Sound World" to discover away from Fenders, 6L6s, 6V6s. I was like you but just discovered in this last year how nice the EL84s are in my H&K Tubemeister 36. Nile Rodgers can't be wrong (ooh, interview with him in Guitarist mag next month).

Let us know how you get on and all the best - H&K amps produce nice cleans but the overdrive on these things is also meant to be very good!

I am already thinking about rebuying all those Fuzz pedals that hate Fenders :D

It's surprisingly Fendery for an EL34 amp, which I suspect might be to do with it being class A.

Cheers for the heads up on the Nile interview. I guess it will be about his Hitmaker sig strat.

He's had a lot of exposure this last year and a lot of the interviews are samey. I hope we learn something new or he gives us the skinny on his sound and how he records his guitar (heard all sorts on this = amp, DI to desk, amp & DI).
