  • I quite like Sheffield actually; some good venues and pubs, pleasant city centre, plenty of history and stuff worth seeing.

  • It's grim up north.

Make sure you watch League Of Gentlemen first. Or Brassed Off. Or the Full Monty. Between all of them you'll get the lay of the land.

Watch out for Meadowhell. And tram lines.

  • Other than that it's great. Find a pub serving Thornbridge, there's quite a few.

  • Quite liked the place about 15 years ago (went to uni there). I dare say it's changed a bit since then, mind...

  • Never been there, but I can guarantee that the addition of a pier to a town does not necessarily mean it will be any better than Sheffield.

I've been there, its standard fare for a middling city, and I am confident that the addition of a pier to the town centre would not improve the place. It might improve its popularity as a tourist destination though.

  • Thanks for that "info" chaps.

It seems ok, countryside etc, houses are cheap, there's ice hockey, a costco and a brewdog bar.

    I shall think some more.

I liked Sheffield. I've been twice.

To See Megadeth/Judas Priest, and Machine Head/The Sword/Metallica.

Ringleader of the Cambridge cartel, pedal champ and king of the dirt boxes (down to 21)

I thought I'd offer something seeing as I am a Sheffielder. I take you are relocating and thinking of Sheffield?

Sheffield has the lowest crime rate of a major city(so they say). Obviously there is crime, but that goes for everywhere.

The city has been redeveloped quite a bit over the last 2 decades and while the town centre is not the biggest it's still decent, although competing with Meadowhell Centre is not easy.

    Good/Upmarket areas in Sheffield;

    Dore
    Totley
    Ecclesall
    High Storrs
    Ranmoor
    Fulwood
    Crookes(Joe Cocker's old haunt)
    Broomhill
    Walkley
    Crosspool
    Lodge Moor
    Bradway

    Plenty of good pub areas

    Broomhill
    Crookes
    Ecclesall Road
Shalesmoor (Fat Cat, Riverside and Kelham Island pubs) real ale etc.

Town has equal measures of good and bad pubs. There is(or was) The Nelson Rock pub which a friend of mine co-owns.

    Plenty of good restaurants etc.

Then of course, you have The Peak District only a few miles away.

Send me a PM if you have any concerns, I'm away at the moment but should be able to get back to you late tomorrow

    :)

Yeah, looking like I'll be moving here in a few months, will probably crash in a hotel a few nights a week for a few months, then look to buy something.

Thanks for the advice, especially @Bellycaster

Originally from Liverpool but have lived 15 miles east of Sheff for 5 years and worked on The Moore for nearly a year.  Visited regularly.

I think its a great place, vibrant, relatively cheap, some ace bars (Cheshire Cat, The Nelson) a few decent restaurants, plenty of surrounding area to explore and its also fairly central for a few other major cities.  I've moved about a bit over the years and its one of the best places I've lived.
