Obviously I do all my own :)

I agree that a working knowledge is a good thing.
It can get you out of a jam and keep your instrument well maintained
It can also help you have realistic expectations if you do need some outside assistance too...

It can also be fun for some people if they have the time.....
But there are times where it is nice to have a real pro (if you are lucky enough to know of one) do it for you

I know how to decorate, but I'll often never get round to it or get it finished fully if I do start a project.
However calling in a great decorator who will have the job done in a couple of days and it will be complete and to my liking , and meaning I can get on with my life is a godsend in my book.

It's finding the pros and avoiding the hacks that is the big deal.....
    Exactly.

It's worth getting this book.   It'll save you a lot of money in setups.

I'm working my way through it now.

    Seconded.

I was recommended that book back on MR and have read it through at least four times now.

  • Is there much difference between the 'How to make your electric guitar sound great' and 'Guitar Players Repair Guide'?

I have the repair guide and it's very good as well.

  • I did a mini course in guitar building. It really helped to show that setting up a guitar and fret dressing etc isn't that difficult.

I got the starter kit from Stew Mac and I have leveled and dressed several guitars now. When you add up the cost of the tools against the cost of a setup its a no brainer, especially when you own lots of guitars.

You can get a squier on ebay for £30 or so. They make a great practicing base and if it all goes wrong its only £30 rather than your £2000 Gibson etc
The Bigsby was the first successful design of what is now called a whammy bar or tremolo arm, although vibrato is the technically correct term for the musical effect it produces. In standard usage, tremolo is a rapid fluctuation of the volume of a note, while vibrato is a fluctuation in pitch. The origin of this nonstandard usage of the term by electric guitarists is attributed to Leo Fender, who also used the term “vibrato” to refer to what is really a tremolo effect.

I've just ordered one of these along with some strings, hopefully should be handy. Cheap enough.

I'll do everything aside from major fretwork or any sort of paint/lacquer.  Had far too many minor emergencies just before gigs to rely on sending things out to other people. :D
-- Before you ask, no, I am in no way, shape or form related to Fuzzdog pedals, I was Fuzzdog before Fuzzdog were Fuzzdog.  Unless you want to give me free crap, then I'm related to whatever the hell you like! --

    Kudos.

I was using pre prepped B&Q stuff to patch an awkward spot. Bit bumpy but I'm just buzzing it hasn't fallen to pieces.

Watched all the youtube videos and the technique is frightening, a real art.
