Scalloped nut?

What's Hot
My Gibson Heritage 80 Standard has a scalloped nut, never seen one before and I don't think Gibson would have done it..

Anyone seen this type of thing before? Benefits? Seems a bit odd! I like it though, looks smart.

  • Perhaps, although this looks even more pro than his, hard to imagine I know. Mmm.. Perhaps I should rip out the unnecessary neck humbucker...

  • Ben Crowe of Crimson Guitars scallops his nuts (ooo-er!)

The PRS 513 had (has?) that too.

  • I understood this to be a "fluted" nut, rather than scalloped.

I came across a few instruments in the eighties that had it done.

It's supposedly easier for chord changes around the nut.

  • Definitely not as it left the factory... It looks nicely done though.

  • Taking material away from between the grooves - what does that achieve?

Adds a bit of visual interest. Also, you can switch to piano wires.

I was tempted to post up a pic of my scalloped nuts but the batts went dead on the camera just as I pressed.....

That's a novel way to put 7 strings on a guitar. MDP should take note.

Never seen it before. Can't imagine it making any difference but it does look really cool.

There's a pic of a PRS in the Dan Erlewine book with a scalloped nut.
I have no idea where that bit of knowledge bubbled up from

Here's a pic of the nut of my old PRS 513 Rosewood (which I sold to TTony)

That's by far the most elegant example I've seen.
