Scalloped nut?

My Gibson Heritage 80 Standard has a scalloped nut, never seen one before and I don't think Gibson would have done it..

Anyone seen this type of thing before? Benefits? Seems a bit odd! I like it though, looks smart.

Perhaps, although this looks even more pro than his, hard to imagine I know. Mmm.. Perhaps I should rip out the unnecessary neck humbucker...

The PRS 513 had (has?) that too.

I understood this to be a "fluted" nut, rather than scalloped.

I came across a few instruments in the eighties that had it done.

It's supposedly easier for chord changes around the nut.

Adds a bit of visual interest. Also, you can switch to piano wires.
