What "other projects" are good instead of guitar?

What's Hot

I'm bored of playing guitar and am trying to find alternative projects. Have had music all my life but do get to a point where I lose interest in certain things, when I realise how ever much I try I'm not going to get any better at them so may as well give up. It happened when I was a pianist but that took a long time (and I was quite good at that), but now it's the guitar I've lost interest for which I'm rubbish at but no amount of effort looks likely to improve that. What do you guys do or recommend?

Do you want other musical projects or non music projects?
If the former then drums and singing lessons are both worthwhile.

  • I'd class drums as the latter...ba dum tish

Would agree with both but it needs to be something I can do myself at home, no reliable free time to attend anything external. Don't really care whether it's musical or not but it was posted here with music in mind yes

You can do Skype lessons and a mate of mine @ChristophEar  is about to launch an iOS singing tutor app (I could probably get you on the beta testers list if you were interested)

You could also do some ear training (again I know of some good apps for that) or learn to read sheet music.

  • To be honest my singing is beyond lessons, but thanks for the kind offer

I've played classical for 22 of my 27 years on earth, I think I'd scream if I had to do any more listening or theory tasks lol

  • I have a synth but I've no idea how to use it, plus not sure it could be used for the music it would ever play, not sure why I bought it actually now thinking about it....

This is my mates site. https://www.easyeartraining.com/store/ear-training-apps/

If you are interested in the singing app I can ask him if he needs any more Beta testers.

    Fair enough.

So howabout. Bass, Mandolin, or Uke?

Or slide guitar, spanish guitar, percussive guitar, alternate tunings?

What styles do you play at the moment?

I've got a mando which went through the same cycle just quicker, (proportionately less strings n frets I guess). I play white stripes and strokes, bit of blues, that's about it really. Tried playing and listening to other stuff but didn't do anything for me really.

I should end the thread, especially now something positive gas come out of it for deijavoo before it just turns even more into me moaning like a tit

I don't think you are moaning.

I ended up giving up for several years because I plateaued. It sucks.

I am. Just fed up of it so much that it's giving me no pleasure whatsoever, I'm only doing it out of habit to waste time between getting home and going to bed

If you want a music related break, why not build a guitar?

  • I don't have the ability or materials, the only good thing left about guitar is that its "pick up and play" so kills the odd half hour spare you know?

Do you have any external outlets for your music like bands, people to jam with, somewhere you share your songs?

I find unless I have a project I don't play. Example, the last time I played bass was at a gig 2 years ago and prior to that I'd been playing near enough every day for the last 3 years.

No I don't, never had the time to commit to playing with others, and I'll have even less going forwards so hence the need for a better quality hobby to spend the spare time I do get

In fairness don't really have many friends in general (surprise surprise) else I'd have plenty to do there instead I expect!
