  • Best to try a number of 30 day trials first. link there are a shed load listed here and best practice is free apparently. I haven't tried it myself yet.

  • If you just mean something to play backing tracks slower, then look at Audacity. It's free and does lots of things with sound files. You can use it to change tempo without altering pitch.

I've used Transcribe for 10 years or more, a very good slow/downer and it's regularly updated. Written by a musician/programmer from London.

    Free trial.

There's a winamp plugin called PaceMaker that does the trick
    All practice and no theory

Import the track into Reaper (which is nag ware so basically free)

Alt drag the file to the right, that will slow it down without changing pitch

Split the file into left and right and flip the phase on one channel. That will cancel out a lot of anything in the middle like vocal, kick snare etc which will allow you to hear the guitar part better. You can also use the included free EQ plugins to exaggerate the guitars register

YouTube also has a speed option on the wee cog. I tried it on Rick's vids but it doesn't work.... :p

I got a demo of this recently too - The Amazing Slow Downer: http://www.ronimusic.com/amsldowin.htm

And it's pretty good. Plenty free options too but not tried many as I usually learn by ear!

I like Amazing Slow Downer personally.
Loads of features and I especially like how you can loop a phrase and have the playback speed increase by user defined increments each time it loops. Also lets you assign markers and save them in playlists so you don't have to trawl your music to find that solo or riff or whatever you're trying to find.

For ease and convenience I use Music Speed Changer app on my Android tablet and phone.

It's free and enables you to slow down or speed up (without altering pitch) and to change the pitch up or down by an octave.
It also has a loop function and you can save your altered tracks.

My band plays in Eb so I use it for practicing along to the original tracks without having to tune up my guitar.

The tempo function is pretty accurate too for slowing down solos etc

Considering it's portable and free I think it's pretty damn good.

    +1.

Also if you have music that is not quite on pitch, like recorded from vinyl, the micro pitch function allows you to fine tune it to match your guitar.

The only thing missing is the ability to beat detect, would make it much easier for setting loop start and end points.

I'm also in the Reaper camp. I used to use a freebee called Drum Trainer, but Reaper is easy, (I've paid for it but you don't have to), and obviously provides so much more DAW stuff on top.

Slowing down tracks is just a benefit of it.
