What's Hot

edited September 2014 in Guitar
By a series of happy coincidences I've had a new guitar day. I accidentally spotted a guitar on eBay while looking at my usual LP junior search.

Then it turned out the guitar was just 8 miles away from me, and the guy was willing to sell for a fair price

In the end after mentioning it to the wife I thought against buying it, then within the hour my bank called me with regards to a complaint I'd made and had given me £200 as an apology.

So I contacted the eBay seller and within the hour he dropped a Gibson LPJ goldtop to me. Now some will remember I may have mentioned on here once or twice I wanted one :D

It sounds brilliant and plays wonderful, of course I'm going to have to get rid of the plastic pickups, but what a bargain guitar.

Will put a pic up soon.

Just remembered my camera on my phone is burnt out and puts an odd purple ripple on photos shot in low light, so I'm going to dig the camera out now.

Few bits to change (pickups, knobs and truss cover) but the neck on it is fantastic. Really please with it, and would have been happy with it at the rrp.

Not sure at moment, always wanted to try the irongear teslasharks but already have a vermillion les Paul with the slash set in it could be pointless. I like the sound of the ones in it so maybe an uncovered set of Gibson 490s

Or just whatever comes up on here or eBay :D

Thank you, I'm very much enjoying the fatter (than my other LP) neck on it.

Any suggestions for not too expensive, not too hot pickups to try?

I've got the same model @underdog

Great score, they really are great guitars.I just took the covers off the pickups as changing them seemed like hard work due to them connecting with little plugs rather than solder.I've changed all the plastics to cream, put gold top hats on and changed the tuners and truss rod cover so it now looks more like a traditional gold top.Seems a bit like bad form to post a picture of it in someone else's NGD thread but if you want to see it just say and I'll post a picture.

Oh and congratulations on a fantastic bargain.

Yes come on let's see pictures, can never have enough pictures of guitars.

How did you go about removing the covers? You have use another base plate don't you?

They are great guitars, for all the hate they get, they made a really good budget guitar with the LPJ, and a great platform for upgrades. I paid what I sold my epiphone for a few months back, so it really is great value.

Yes I had to fix new base plates on.It's a really easy mod.Should take even the most ham fisted person no longer than an hour.

    Here's a couple of pics,

That transforms it, removing the the pickup covers.
There's also a step-by-step picture thread on how it's done over on MLP.
    I'd send a link but I'm banned again :/

Cheers guys, I will give that a shot as the pickups sound nice and different to my other LP.

@breakstuff that looks very nice, I'm going to see how it looks with uncovered pups and different knobs but still with black tuners, switch etc.

@underdog it's really simple. The black covers are only held on by a blob of glue and are easily removed. It's then just a case of screwing the new plates to the bottom of the pickups using the screws that are already there.I had a couple of knackered pickups which I nicked the plates off and the screw holes lined up perfectly. You then just refit the pickups as you would any other.
