What's a good seven string

What's Hot

You know, to play heavy like, after I've had a few lagers.

I like narrow nuts 39mm ish and neck pockets.  Jackson?  Big no?

39mm? Good luck with that! :O My 7 is 50mm. Ibby are 48mm. I like the 1527 cheap and decent enough. :-)

  • Ibanez RG1527 and RG7620 spring to mind. I've had the 7620, probably the best 7 string I owned.

Obviously it won't be a 39mm nut, but on my Knamer thing it's a narrow nut and a 2 3/16" neck pocket.  I don't fancy the classical stance and justn want to noodle heavily with another string as I don't like drop tunings much.

What is the nut on the Ibanez compared to a Jackson?  Thinking the Jackson might have a fatter neck?  Fatter is good.

Haven't considered other brands to be honest.

  • Schecter's have fairly fat necks.

  • Looked at the atx C7 but it's a straight 16".  Don't think I could handle that low down. Leaning towards Jackson Radius.

Get a six string and put baritone strings on it? Tune it like a seven minus the top string unless you are really intent on high up noodling

EDIT: thats what I'm probably doing to my Dean Soltero. Earnie Ball make a 13-72 baritone set that I want my nut re-cut for as I drop tune to A and 12's arent cutting it. Standard gibson scale length on my dean too I think.

  • Maybe try and find a Jackson COW7. Has a thicker neck than a Ibanez. There's a couple for sale on Gumtree right now.

One with 6 strings on it and an angled Telecaster bridge pickup fitted at the neck position.

If you are set on a 7, you'd be foolish not to look at a Chapman ml-7. BRILLIANT guitar for the money. £500 gets you ebony fretboard, satin neck and hipshot hardware! I really fancy a tele shaped one. Not sure about neck thickness but it's probably bareable :) go to Andertons in Guildford and play one if you can.

If you want heavy but standard 6 strings, you could do worse than a baritone. Also, I just happen to have one for sale lol

  • I've played a few 7s, and while I know they're not for me...if I was going to get one, it'd be one of Jaden's lower-end creations (Series 2-7, a shade under a grand I believe). I've played a couple of Ibbys, a Schecter and a few Jadens. Of all of them, Jaden's Original Series 7-string was the least offensive to my hands ;)

Hmmm I hear Ibanez and Schecter make some good 7-strings.

Then, when you're finished with it and decide it's not for you, let mdphillips make a clear tone greasy sausage fingers conversion/creation/part-Tele out of it for you (or a friend). :)
