I had a brainstorming session the other day -
I had an idea on the train coming home last night ... this will call for some sampling ..

Do it well and I'll give you five points ...

I fancy some Jan Hammer Miami Vice action .... I've managed to create a passable synth patch I just need to create a Linn drum sound and then I'm in business.

  • I think I'm going to cover this song.
    That's instant disqualification!

Thankfully, I managed to bail out within three beats of the intro. Phew!

I've been listening to a lot of 80's music recently but I find that the songs that I like from the 80's don't necessarily have an 80's sound. If you take a song like C'mon Eileen for example, it's not a million miles away from something Mumford and Sons might release today. Similarly some of U2's 80's classics sound very similar to The Killers today.

So I'm finding this challenge a little more tricky than expected. My first couple of ideas didn't sound 80's enough. I was initially trying to avoid using a chorus pedal but I think it's time to go fully 80's with this one!, - synth, chorus and harmonizer at the ready.

  • Put loads of reverb on the snare, and get some really terrible drum machine tom fills going.  Whatever musical ideas you have will surely sound 80s against the drums.

Entry submitted. I quite enjoyed using every hair rock cliche in the book, even if the judges don't :D

I had a session on the computer today. I now have a reggae drum groove with a couple of rhythm guitars and even a synth line on top. And chorus and flanger all over the guitars courtesy of my old Quadraverb. :-&

Still some work to do to knock it into shape but I've made a start at least.
    :)

I am excited, I've done a back track that I am surprised at - after initially thinking I might do the 1880s instead, this does seem to sound quite a bit 1980s and almost like an actual song. Tomorrow's task is to put on the guitar parts (they are currently just midi instruments to give the general effect), write some words, and then sing them.

The guitar bit should be fine, not so sure about the vocals....

I've taken a lot longer on this one, usually I do it in two hours on the due date

Mine is taking shape .. gone in a different direction ... I like tasks like these. They take you out of your comfort zone.
