That's come out really well, congratulations! :)

  • That looks nice. Very cool! Looks classier than a studio, but still has a rawk, rough n ready look.

Dead impressed. I hope my next one turns out half as good...

  • Thanks very much. :)
Got the reflectors on there now which look much nicer and just ordered a set of Oil City Pickups. Ordered 4conductor wiring so they can be split, might go for the full Jimmy Page mod!

That is a wicked job - love that loads...

  • Thanks Jooky, I consider that high praise coming from your good self.
I must admit the photos are taken from the most flattering angles. There's nothing horrendously wrong but some bits could have been neater tbh. It was never going to be pristine I tell myself!
I should just stfu and accept the praise but I've never been good with compliments lol.

I think it looks great. What did you finish the back with?

    Cool - worth an ask!!

Just as an aside, did you use the standard or short tail Vibramate?
I think it's the short tail one for SGs but can't remember! I'll have a look later.

I followed Wez's guide on tru oil finishing which can be found in this section. Sanded the body to 400 grit with wet & dry, rubbed in tru oil and left over night. I then wet sanded with oil using 600, 800 and 1000 grit. I was going to go up to 1200 but it would have been too dark so I denibbed with 0000 wire wool then waxed and buffed with clear briwax. It has a slight sheen, not too glossy and the neck feels lovely.

  • Lovely job! My own personal taste says I'd go for cream pickup rings and scratchplate, but as I say that's personal taste and not to detract from the quality of the work you've done there ;)

  • Thanks Dave, orginally I thought I'd go for cream with the scratch plate as I don't normally like LPs without but I'm kinda warming to the more stealthier look!

I like the cream pickup rings as well and gold knobs for the old school blacktop look.

I'll second that, cream plastics are obligatory:

With the new knobs, pickguard on...

... not sure about the reflectors with the bare nickel/worn gold.

Can't decide on guard on or off now! I'm sticking with the black plastics though, the all black look gives it a nice sleek appearance imo. I think it kinda sits somewhere between the cream of a standard and the double bound black of a custom if that makes sense?

Love it as it is (either with or without guard*), looks played and purposeful*.
The cream plastics just look a bit traditional and "show room" to me.

Much as I would have loved to have taken your worn gold fittings, that LP looks great, good job
    :)

  • I think it's taken a average Studio and made it a bit special. =D>

How about using a 3/5-ply LP Custom style pickguard? Looks great though!

    How much for it?

Your guitar, I want your guitar!

Nice job mate.  Personally I'm all about the black stuff here.

All black, with guard, looks superb.

Fantastic job. I just wouldn't have the patience but I am very jealous.  Well done. Have a wow.

  • Thanks for all the very kind comments. I can't see me selling it just yet lol.

I think I'll keep the guard on for now, I considered a multiply one but I think the white would look quite harsh against the light brown "binding". That's why I'm also not sure about the reflectors, the silver inserts don't look quite right next to the worn nickel/gold. I think gold inserts would be too much though.

@ Chuffola: I'm not the most patient person either and I'm sure I could have done a better job if I was.

I've ordered a Jimmy Page wiring kit to go with the new Oil City Blitz Spirits, some knob pointers and a some different strap locks. I'm tempted to add a B7 but that will have to wait for now.
