Hi there, I have just taken delivery of a stripped out black dean razorback,it was an u chipped example ,I say was because it has been damaged in transit on the bottom tips . http://i280.photobucket.com/albums/kk170/nutbox76/Mobile Uploads/2014-10/20141014_181218_zpsy5dsw7ct.jpg http://i280.photobucket.com/albums/kk170/nutbox76/Mobile Uploads/2014-10/20141014_181212_zpsdb3ws0ip.jpg http://i280.photobucket.com/albums/kk170/nutbox76/Mobile Uploads/2014-10/20141014_181202_zpswqmkmck1.jpg Now I am looking to paint this so what would be the best way to repair this? Anyway here is a pic of this beauty and I can wait to get this up and running but obviously that's after I have finished my ibanez. http://i280.photobucket.com/albums/kk170/nutbox76/Mobile Uploads/2014-10/20141014_202540_zpsrlwtbhur.jpg Thanks for looking dazz

Strip the lot off, tidy up any damage to the wood and start again........thats what I would do.....

that is what i would do on this. Build up with auto body filler rather than wood filler, key the existing finish and spray over with something compatible

its not how i would do somethign with value, but it would do for this

I have decided I am going to spray the back black and put an ash top on ,but I would like to stain it like this on this mayones Regius 6 katatonia guitar http://www.mayones.com/en/katalog/signature_guitars/Mayones_Regius_6_Katatonia_II But how do I go about getting this effect? All help appreciated thanks

    I remember asking about this.

My idea was to spray black over the top in a moderately heavy coat but with no grain filler. Then make a red grain filler paste up, rub it into the grain then sand the whole lot back so only the grain in red, the rest is black.

Does that make sense? There are more experienced finishers here who might have better ideas but that would be the method that jumps to mind.

Obviously, sourcing suitable finishes and filler is going to take experimentation.

That's the basic way to get a Gibson voodoo finish- not quite as striking as the mayonnaise

they often look painted on by hand up close. I think they might be spraying red, painting on a liquid mask by hand, the spraying black

either way, you start with a good bit of grainy ash. If you look at the Gibson voodoo's some look great and others really dont- all down to the wood used

Cheers wez very interesting read,I have done the staining black and then rubbing right back to bring out the grain and then staining red on a maple veneer, but this is very clean isn't it. It's almost like the grain is lower in some of the photos,It kind of reminds me of 80s mfi furniture lol.

    H there
Just an update, I have stripped the paint off the body and just need to repair the points.
I have brought some metal filler with the ally fibres in it ,would this be good to use or will it chip off as soon as it touched.
    Cheers dazz
