The local post office already has Creme Eggs.

    Now that is progress.

My local shop has Screme Eggs for halloween...

Are you sure they don't just still have eggs and due to a gap in the shelf space they dusted them off and put them on display?

I don't think so. Fred (the proprietor of said establishment) specifically pointed out their arrival to me.

My grandmother was a proper cook and farmers wife, her mince pies were sweet, succulent and tasty. She got into the habit of filling a cake tin with a batch for me to take away every time we visited. She's gone now of course but I still miss those fantastic mince pies and to my memory none since have measured up. Who'd a thought you could only have them in December!

    Mince pies are great.

Even better is a mincemeat toastie. So get that unloved Breville from the back of the cupboard (it'll be next to the bread maker and yogurt machine).

Make sure you let is cool a bit first though, otherwise it's like eating molten lava.

well, you can make it anytime really, we've still got loads left over from last year. I would say now is about the right time.

  • I couldn't understand why my local co-op was stocking mince pies, in (as you'd expect) Christmas-themed packaging ...but with a best before date of 13/10/13 whilst they are "not suitable for freezing" ...

I get that some people like to start to stock up early for budgeting reasons in the months before Xmas...but do many people really want to eat mince pies in September and October?

Someone I used to work with rather naively informed me that he had never tried a Mince Pie until he was about 15, which is ok, but when he told he proceeded to put ketchup on it and shove the lot in, thinking it was "Literally" minced meat, I could never fully trust his judgment from that day forward. He was about 35 when he told me.

As for me, I think they are pretty awful, I'm the same with Xmas Pud, it's just mega sickly stuff.

I like 'em with a very unhealthy dollop of clotted cream on top.

I should have a Santa Courier arriving sometime in the next few days, so the odd mince pie seems quite appropriate.

Commercial mince pies always are too sweet. Try making your own.  Buy reasonable quality mincemeat, ie not gloop and sugar, and cut the mincemeat with shredded apple

Why the hell is it called mincemeat ?
