Footloose (anyone cover it?)

What's Hot
The cheesy party season is approaching, so we've been brainstorming some new covers to get the ladies dancing.

Anyone have any success with the oh so cool Kenny Loggins and Footloose?

Just had a bit of a YouTube browse and there's a lot going on, and we're a single guitar band, so a bit a rearranging will be needed, but we need to keep it as an uptempo boogie.

  • We tried in my last band, but IIRC I didn't make a big success of it.

There's a lot going on between guitar and synth but they don't overlap much so you could cover both with one guitar I reckon.

Instinct says it'd medley nicely with Huey Lewis's Power of Love for an 80's movie special :D

Well it's certainly an ear worm, been humming it all afternoon.

  • Hey. I play this in a single guitar wedding band. One of our favourites. Works great, doesn't sound thin at all.

Our approach is for the drums and bass to play very similar to the original giving it lots of energy and movement. The bass line moves around a lot. Then the guitar fills in all the parts where they seem to be needed. The stabs in the verses, the arpeggio thing in the pre chorus and then chords picking out of the vocal rhythm emphasis in the chorus.

I have a very distant memory of an article on Nathan East talking about how he came up with the baseline. I might go google that see if he was on it at all...

First rehearsal with this on Sunday. I've worked out what I'm playing, just need to put it all together with the others.

It really is an ear-worm of a song...cheesy as hell* but fun to play.

*That's a bad example of something that's cheesy.

Having watched the film the other night ( I am now female or gay almost certainly) I was thinking of this Discussion when they played the theme choon. The intro bit is the only bit you'd have to do as per the record, beyond that much more the bassist's song.

Slightly off topic, but I'd love to cover this.

Would you say we were approaching a zone of danger?

I know what you mean @ThePrettyDamned. It's only that one and footloose I know, but both killer tunes (in an 80s ironic nostalgic sort of way of course ;-) )

Not even that, I was born in 1990.

    Theyre both just... Brilliant.

In a nostalgic... Oh wait. ;)

Another one is holding out for a hero.

    Or... Is that just me?

1990...wow makes me feel old (there'll be a zero at the end of my age next June and I'm not looking forward to it). I was 11 or 12 when Top Gun came out and it was soooo cool. Loved that soundtrack cassette ;-)

Did it in the wedding band for years. Needs a strong bass player :) The guitar is ok as long as you get the G to a bends in the right timing it all comes together (we played it in a rather than Ab which the original is in)
There are some tricky bits in it like the Pre chorus is different in V1 than it is V2 (there is an extra gap) in order to remove confusion we just played both verses the same
Count 8 bars in the Ahhhh Ahhh Ahhh bit before the stop in the "I'm cutting it loose" line. (That was my favourite bit to sing... you can really roar through it)
The ending is a bit of a bugger as well to get everybody on board with
    Eventually broke it don to
Everybody cut Everybody cut (Bah Bah)
Everybody cut Everybody cut (Bah Bah)
Everybody cut Everybody cut (Rest) EveryBody! Everybody cut footloose 2 3 Bah Bah
Musical notation.... overrated ;) Hope that helps

  • Thanks Cabicular that does help, have a wisdom.

We went through it a few times last night (along with a few other tracks). We certainly need to work on that ending.
