    Delay is what happens to guitars, echo is what happens in the Alps.

    Or, delay is artificial, echo is natural (at least that's how I think of it)

    Delay is what happens to trains, echo is what happens to guitars.

    Delay = crisp, bright.

    Echo = warm, dark.

    That's how I see the difference anyway.

  • Echo is a newspaper in Liverpool, delay is frustrating.

    If I see "echo" on a pedal, I assume "tape echo" which conjures up images of old machinery, wobbly repeats and diminishing clarity with each repeat. Awesome old school sounds.

    I've always seen delay (in the context of pedals/effects) as an umbrella term encompassing this, shiny clear digital delays and all the other bits in between.

    Manufacturers play fast and loose with the terminology to slot a pedal into whichever marketing niche they're aiming for, but the above is loosely how it tends to work.

  •  Echo is the word that digital delay makers use when they want to make you think of it as not digital.

    Delay is simply a note that sounds a period of time after the first one and just once.
    Echo has a feedback loop so that the delayed sound is repeated as an attenuated version which dies away eventually.

    Reverb is just a modern, fancy name for echo. Abbey Road had an "echo" chamber!

    Mind you, different words are used depending on the times of the various delays and repeats.

  • I always think echo as short, delay as long (say 400ms or more).

    Oh gawd, I can't think of a delay or echo pun for this post. :(

    But the Boss DM2 had a maximum, er, repeat time of 300ms. And 'DM' stood for 'Delay Machine'.

    At the risk of being a Copicat, I can't think of anymore puns either....

    That's the same one that My Bloody Valentine use, I think.
