The sample area of the string is narrower giving you more string separation and obviously they're prone to hum, but the actual voicing is not unlike a low wind humbucker.
That's a gross generalisation anyway, certainly of early P90s. From the mid 50s on they got a bit more brash and midrange-y.
They vary a lot, I've had some that were very thick in the mids, got some Vineham Old Dogs which I hope have more clarity with some bite. Chimier types in my old Peerless
