Your DOB guitar

  • I had a YOB 55 LP Jumior a while ago. As said above, a lot of it was to do with the thrill of the chase and 'having' it. But once I'd got it I didn't want to play it out and anyway it didn't play as well as my other guitars so I realised it was a lot of money to have tied up in something that just wasn't getting used. Lovely guitar though and I'd buy another Junior if it was at the right price, but I wouldn't care about the YOB and would go for one that plays well and has had a good refret etc.

I commissioned a Les Paul Junior replica from @JXG Guitars and had my new born son's Date Of Birth as the serial number, so, if he becomes seduced by Rock n' Roll and the 6 string temptress thus negating any ability to earn....at least he'll have one!

I was a touch more selfish, had my DOB put on mine.

    A 1967 Telecaster Bass.

Fender's neck date stamps from the 60s don't actually refer to a day, the first number is a code for the neck type. 23 happens to be the code for a Tele Bass.

It has to be white - I had a poster of Suzi Quatro with one, when I was about 10 - or Blue Flower.

I remember when looking for a yob Strat, I was puzzled that Fender only ever seemed to make Strats on the 22nd day of the month. :) Then I went and did a little more research on their date stamps!

I don't think I would get one for my birth year. However, I wouldn't mind getting one for both of my kids. Easier and Cheaper.

Possibly other date like wedding year, at least if it goes tits up, there would be some satisfaction in burning it.

If I won the lottery I'd have myself a 1995 Ibanez JPM100 - big John Petrucci fan, and I'd love a really nice Ibanez. They cost a bomb though, and sadly there's pretty much fuck-all else interesting from 1995. I'd rather not get a bog-standard Strat or Les Paul, although I suppose I'd be persuaded if the right black LP Custom showed up...

August 1975, there's nothing around at the time which I'd want.

  • June 1960. Lottery money only, in my case, unless Epiphone were making Casinos then that are still relatively affordable.

I will try to give the short version of this story.
    B-)
I think this might be a Date of Birth guitar.

    imageimageimage

It started off as a year of birth guitar. It is a 1953 Gold Top, Converted by the brilliant Scott Lentz. It is also my number 1 guitar.

But then.....I had a look at the pots. Which are dated Week 16, 1953.  A few days before I was born.
    :-O  :-O

The early (Heritage) Les paul re-issues are very nice guitars!

If you step away from the "big two" brands there were some cool guitars being made in the early '80s, quite specific to the period too so they wouldn't be exactly the same as something you can still buy today.

From the USA - maybe a Hamer or BC Rich?

From Japan - Ibanez Artist, Yamaha SG, Washburn Falcon, maybe something from Aria?

Funnily enough, I've found that site too in the last 20 minutes. And I've always wanted a 335. So it might as well be a 1968! :)

    R.
I am not sure that Gibson serials are really accurate, even in 1968. Unless of course you can find a shipping log which shows close numbers....and that would not be easy. I have a 335 with a crown inlay that looks like the shape used in 1969. But the serial comes up 1968.

  • 1973...was anybody making good guitars then? Ibanez?

Anyway I choose Paul Stanley's custom LoBue asymmetric flying V from that timeframe.

For April 1965 I would probably be after a Fender offset... ideally a nice Electric XII, but a Jag or Jazzmaster would do, or maybe an Epiphone casino... However, in the real world, I suspect it would be highly unlikely.

In the experience of wise forum members......how often is it possible to see pot dates via the f-hole of a vintage Gibson/Epiphone guitar?

I had an April '65 Jag.

Selling it was one of my more stupid decisions...
