I have it on good authority that David doesn't overly imbibe but does very occassionally

If you listen to these, Oslo as after coke with David Crosby and god knows with OTTA.

However, it really does show how good he is, and the Whammy on the solo's rock.

It's bad sound but amazing playing.

solo starts 4.30

solo starts 3.00

What do you lot think?

  • Fuck whatever he was on, in the first clip he does incredibly well just to manage to actually play underwater.

More impressive stories regarding playing while 'tired and emotional'  were Santana (neck of his guitar being a snake while on acid) and Megadeth managing to play at all while doing speed balls.

  • Gilmour has always had chops he just likes to be understated a lot of the time.

In C Numb and OTTA the trem control is frightening.

Indeed, and it's almost a lack of confidence. But hell with thst little line beforehand he's doing stuff in that C Numb solo that no-one else could.

  • I do honestly think that around Pulse was when David was at his very, very best.  OK the band output was tailing off but his tone, control and phrasing was just sublime around that time, as well as his voice being a it's best IMO.  I'm one of these people who really isn't impressed by much (especially guitar wise) but to this day I can still vividly remember watching Pulse for the first time and being completely blown away.  Actually though my favourite Gilmour performance is the version of Wish You Were Here as I remember seeing him sing the solos and just being WTF? at the time.

    vibrato?
The Bigsby was the first successful design of what is now called a whammy bar or tremolo arm, although vibrato is the technically correct term for the musical effect it produces. In standard usage, tremolo is a rapid fluctuation of the volume of a note, while vibrato is a fluctuation in pitch. The origin of this nonstandard usage of the term by electric guitarists is attributed to Leo Fender, who also used the term “vibrato” to refer to what is really a tremolo effect.

DIsagree. For all the bells and whistles of `cnumb above, this is my fave version- the tempo, the passion, the choice of notes and the control. Oh and the tone- G2 not the P1.

21.20 for the solo. It's perfection. The tone is 100%.

THe bends at 22,20 are jaw dropping- if anyone can tell me how...

    Oh and it oozes passion.

THe Money solo earlier also good.

That's one of the things with Gilmour.  I'm love trem technique and it is for that reason that a strat is MY guitar.  I have spent years incorporating different variants into my playing and then when I see someone just going wobble-wobble-wobble on the trem arm it puts me right off.  My favourite aspect of the guitar is the amount of ways you can approach the same note.  Rather than use a trem arm as another way of approaching notes, with the vast amount of players you see it becomes like a fall back trick or a way of finishing a phrase.  It really frustrates me.  Gilmour and Beck are two people who actually USE the tremolo to express themselves.

Guy Pratt said this to me:

    1. He is the best player he's played with, incl Slash, Vai blah blah
    2. When pther guitarists put a load of diamonds and gems at your feet, David finds one gem. It's huge, perfect an flawless. He polishes it for hours, places it in the most perfect gold setting and gently hands it you on a velvet cushion. I get that.

Yeah, that's a good way of putting it.  There is nothing out of place, it's all very meaningful and perfect and intentional.

Even his improv sections have an air of being spontaneously composed, rather than running licks together.
