  • Just want to clarify any misunderstanding here, Wudtone has four kits designed for maple necks. ( Also any of the other dye only kits are suitable for use on maple or other wood eg mahogany necks) .

The kits are two pack, tint coat and top coat. Apply tint coats until you have the intensity of colour ( 2-3 is usually enough).

Wudtone is a completely different product to Tru Oil in its elements and results. Tru Oil contains polymerised linseed oil. This is something we would not put into a product aimed at being tone friendly for any kind of musical instrument.

Vintage Amber,  does have some colour attitude for the most smoke filled bar effect

Take that tonal talk with a pinch of salt. Its not going to make a discernable difference here.

I will say that having used clear wudtone on a neck it was easy and worked well. I used the satin one on a neck I didn't want to be as sleek as I get with tru-oil. It was a headless guitar and I didn't want to drop it. ;)

Having used various oil, lacquer and wudtone finishes on maple necks I honestly think thickness is more important than type of finish for both feel and tone

yeah, it has the word "poly" in it so that means it must be bad  ;)

actually, like any finish, if its used inappropriately it will affect tone.

I used danish oil (another polymerised oil) on the top of an acoustic I made.  It killed it dead for about 6 months.   It just soaked into the spruce more than it should and took longer to cure because of it.   it was a bad choice for that application.   Guitar now sounds lovely - it just took a while to get there

Tru-oil doesn't ever soak in like that though.   I think andy's point is that it builds on the surface and can potentially stay softer for longer.   I actually agree with this .... if you use it that way.  I know some like to build it on the surface and use it as a lacquer but i don't - i like it super thin and really well worked into the wood.

another I am using which could be built up on the surface is Eze-oil thanks to a little sample @gspbasses sent me.

Its a nice satin finish not unlike the wudtone natural.

works well over primary colour stains which, my wetsanded tru-oil never did due to the destructive nature of the wetsanding process

22 years I was a spray painter. I may as well kill myself immediately.
In all seriousness, I don't want to ridicule Andywudtone. Its a genuine query.

    I know it's genuine.

So, how'd you end it all anyway? Pills, knife, tall bridge, can I have your spray booth set up? Just sayin'....

I don't actually think it matters a rat's arse really. Give any 'named guitarist' a random guitar and they will sound like the 'any named guitarist' they are fabled for being. Be it plastic, organic, oil, or bare. Just depends on what ya want innit?

    I have been drinking.

  • Hi @WezV, I don't want to fall out and I'm not here to tell folks what they should or should not take with a pinch of salt.

I will say I genuinely believe everything makes a difference as far as guitars are concerned and it really is up to the individual as to whether differences are discernible too.

Polymerised Linseed OIl ( or stand oil as it is sometime known) is easy enough to research.

Do that and a few phrases will keep leaping out.

    higher viscosity

    excellent flexibility

    more elastic coatings

    tough, enamel-like, none-yellowing film.

    is more elastic.

Given that thin and hard is a view shared by many as good. That should help you understand the reason we would not use Polymerised Linseed Oil in a product used with musical instruments if resonance and tone was a consideration. kind regards

Don't worry, it's only some crappy Bulmers that was festering at the back of the fridge. Still tastes pretty good though.
