Wah on your board or off your board?

What's Hot
the_jaffathe_jaffa Frets: 1795
Do you run with your wah pedal mounted to your board or freestanding off to the side.

I'm trying to redesign my board to fit a new pedal in and make space for some future additions but am struggling with space.  Obvious option would be to move the wah offboard freeing up a load of extra room.

Would this just get annoying during setup etc or is it no big deal really?

Any thoughts?

I have mine on the floor. Means you don't have to take it with you if you're not using it, and can carry it in your kit bag rather than adding extra weight to your pedalboard.

Off. My Ibanez weeping demon is not going to fit on my pedaltrain mini. I can see the attraction of having it all on the board, but realistically, I don't use it that much with my band and not having to lug it everywhere is a great option to have.

Off, it needs to be first in the chain anyway so it doesn't matter if you don't end it and take it off. Easily put it in at the front again with a patch cable.

I have mine off the board as sometimes i like to have it at the end of the chain effecting the delays.

  • On :) It's a low profile one though. Also have a volume pedal on the board.

IIRC one of the reasons for off is that wahs can be a source of noise when next to other pedals?

Sounds like off the board is pretty common and certainly a sensible potential option.  I'll have an experiment and see.  Only stumbling block might be that I run my fuzz first in the chain before running into the wah but I think I can sort this pretty easily.

    Off board.

    In the box.

On the shelf in the shop.

Never got on with them as I lack co-ordination.

Every time I gave one a go I ended up selling it on. :(

Off the board for two reasons:
    1.  The board is smaller and simpler, which is always a good thing.
    2.  You can position the wah exactly where you want it, which is usually slightly nearer to you than the other pedals on the board, giving you better control.

  • On the floor, feels totally unnatural on the board and being a lanky git makes it worse.

Off of course.  On is "tidy"; off is rock 'n' roll.

    I rest my case.

And that is the winning comment. Looks like it will be moving off board.

    Seemed like a good idea.....

I like mine third in chain, behind a fuzzdrive thing and tuner. I don't wah when fuzzing really, and the fuzz does better first, then when I do wah with fuzz I hit on a distortion later in the chain for super saturation and compression, which means I get a very powerful wah tone (courtesy of fuzz first) but without horrible shrieks (courtesy of the distortion limiting it).
