Today I swapped a pickup..

And I'm disproportionally pleased with myself.  Is this the beginning of a long road to ruin?

This is the end product

But I was sightly bemused by these three circlular holes beneath the pickgaurd.  The guitar version of crop circles?

It's weight relief.  Must have been heavy if it needed three holes.

Really?  Doesn't look like much wood (and hence weight) was removed. :)

yeah, having done weight relief holes they would need to be a lot more of them drilled deeper to make much difference.  then maybe you can reduce the overall weight by 20 - 30% tops.  to go beyound that you need to start with proper chambering

these 3 holes will be an ounce or two at most

  • I think he might be joking?

There's enough weight missing from a strat anyway by the time you've removed the wood for the pickups, control cavity, and trem cavity.  :)

For substantial weight reduction, I'd consider removing those 22 metal stripey things that are scattered along the neck.
