Stupid question perhaps but what wire is used inside guitars? Is it all pretty similar or different wires for different jobs?

It's all pretty similar. It can be anything really, the gauge is not important because the currents are so small. Sometimes it's shielded (mostly Gibson-style guitars), sometimes it's not and then the whole cavity should be (mostly Fender-style guitars). Excessive amounts of thin shielded cable can dull the tone noticeably.

It's more usual to choose it based on what's easiest to work with.

Nice one cheers @ICBM so basically just get a few different colours of unshielded (for fender types) and shielded (gibson types)? And keep them short as possible?

    Yes.

The vintage-style cloth braided stuff is actually really good - you can just push back the cloth rather than stripping it, and if you get the proper cotton stuff rather than modern synthetic fibre, it's almost completely heatproof so you can't melt it - which can be a problem with fine shielded plastic cable.
