Ive always been drawn to firebirds in the same way. Never tried one, and generally don't care for Gibsons, but they've got a certain something
    called a massive balance problem.

I always wanted one - Phil Manzanera was an early hero of mine - and finally bought one. It lasted three weeks before I had to sell it. I'm just not tall enough to play it - Phil is around 8" taller than me! I can't comfortably reach the end of the neck because it sticks out so far to the left, and the balance makes it impossible to tilt up at a steeper angle without it being too low at the other end to pick easily - if I was taller that would work.

I still play every one I see in case the laws of physics have somehow changed in the mean time, but they haven't yet...

    I'm 5' 9" so i have similar reservations

The Bigsby was the first successful design of what is now called a whammy bar or tremolo arm, although vibrato is the technically correct term for the musical effect it produces. In standard usage, tremolo is a rapid fluctuation of the volume of a note, while vibrato is a fluctuation in pitch. The origin of this nonstandard usage of the term by electric guitarists is attributed to Leo Fender, who also used the term “vibrato” to refer to what is really a tremolo effect.

This! I also always wanted one too, but once I had one it was just too apparent I wasn't Rock'n'Roll enough to keep it. Same with the Explorer (that one lasted an afternoon before I took it back and got a much more appropriate Casino!).

Which brings us to what I have always wanted and will probably never have - a Rickenbacker 4003. I love the look the sound and how comfortable it is to play, but every time I play one, I find myself thinking how much I dislike the neck. I just can't get away with it, and it always disappoints me. I've lusted for one since I first saw Lemmy with one, and probably always will. But I don't think I'll have one. :(

Anything costing more than £300. ;)
I have two (very) young kids and a spectacular lack of spare cash!

    This!

Hopefully when theyre both at school and the nursery fees are gone...and the car is paid for...maybe..then...just...i can get something nice!

I enjoy coming on here but i am often overwhelmed with the urge to punch people who can afford nice guitars and keep showing me photos of them right in the kisser.

And i mean that with much love and affection;)

USA Parker Fly, never tried one though and reports of how thin the necks are put me off actively seeking one out to try.

Play some older ones - they've changed the neck specs a lot over the years. My '73 4001 has a totally different neck to my previous '06 4003 - much narrower and slightly deeper. There are even big differences between some of the modern years.

I think they're longer than you are tall :).

(You're only an inch shorter than me, so I'm not laughing too much ;).)

    Gibson Les Paul Standard.

Grew up loving the shape, the sound, the mythology. As ive got older ive become much less fond of HBs and i just look at the prices of these new and think - never buying that.

Gretsch Country Gent/White Falcon/Any of the bling models.

For the reasons @Meltedfuzzbox gave above

    "Gretsch White Falcon

I have a horrible feeling I will find it awful if I ever do play it"

Beautiful looking and sounding but they dont half look uncomfortable and have fiddly bits. I shall leave them, shining like Excalibur in The Stone. Never played by me.

A sunburst heavily flamed , Gibson Les Paul Standard, I have had a fir few Les Pauls but never the AAA Flamed top standard....I would still love one, but I know it would not be used as much as the Guild, so would prob not bother these days, what a shame !

I used to have a JS1200. Great guitar. Loved the Chromeboy idea.

The chrome Satriani or blue flower Vai ibanez for me. I was just getting into guitar when the Guitar Legends concert was on the telly (Expo '92) and I drooled over the ibanez catalogue and the ads in Guitar World.

Can I suggest that you try a Parker Nitefly?  The original ones, no longer made, but available 2nd hand.  I've tried the expensive USA Parkers (Deluxe) and found the neck too thin.  The NiteFly has a chunkier neck, great hardware, and is easy to mod with new pickups if need be.  The more expensive USA equivalent (Deluxe, etc), have such thin bodies that apparently swapping pickups is difficult to impossible.  And I didn't like the sound or the feel of the Deluxe personally.  Heresy, but each to his own!

  • I can never quite decide between a black Les Paul with gold hardware or a natural ES335 like @jalapeno's beauty.

I remember that Guitar Legends thing being on TV. Funny, all the people the 17 year old me thought were rubbish would be the ones id be watching now and vice versa!

I distinctly remember wondering who the hell John McLaughlin was. And Phil Manzanera too!

I bet thats on Youtube somewhere.
