My current band is a New Wave/Power pop covers band playing hits and obscurities from 77-83 ish from most of the named players/bands  XTC , Squeeze , Blondie , Blockheads etc .

Its some of the best stuff I've ever played , really interesting guitar parts and use of effects , incredibly good fun and a refreshing change from Rock standards .

Can't think of many to add, but massive +1s to Glen Tilbrook, Steve Jones, the Stranglers, Dead Kennedys and Norman Watt-Roy. And I don't know much XTC but the bass playing on "Senses Working Overtime" is shit-hot.

There IS this guy though, John Alder from the Jags. My dad showed me this track a while ago and I love it. Some awesome playing throughout and a great solo at 1:50 odd (song in question ends at 3:23, not heard any of the other stuff if I'm honest).

Shit, I thought you were all joking about Pearl Thompson!!!

Having said that, she is quite convincing (and good for her age!!)

I always thought the guys in XTC were pretty good players - also talking heads (sorry don't know the names). Also not sure if they qualify as new Wave - never been too sure who is in that particular genre...

Early Japan, was pretty new wave, and they were a truly talented band, ahead of their time, people think they were new romantic, but they had split up by the time nr was around, and we're clearly the forefathers of that type of thing, people always remember ghosts etc but the early stuff is bloody brilliant!

Steve Jones, as mentioned, very underrated guitarist.

Paul Cook, very underrated drummer. Saw him with Phil Collen in Manraze, supporting Alice Cooper a few years ago, really fantastic drumming.

Pete Shelley. The solo at 1.19 here opened my eyes to all that is possible.

Captain Sensible of The Damned is an excellent guitar player.  Credit to Dave Greenfield for keyboards with The Stranglers.

    John Cooper Clarke.

He showed up at my daughter's place of work a few weeks ago. Yup, still a punk.
