Not saying "best" because there will be dozens I have forgotten, but one that immediately leaps to mind is "Brothers in Arms".

Not sure about best but even after being ripped from presumably a VHS and uploaded to YouTube this still sounds awesome to me. (Live version of Kings X - Dogman)

My first thought was something / anything by Mark Knopfler.

Ty Tabor has always had a pretty unique tone, heavy yet not metal sounding.

I wonder what impact Dug's 12 string bass has on the overall sound of the band. Can't really discern it on that clip.

    Heavy = Nuno on Pornograffitti
Tasty = Anything from Eagles Hell Freezes Over

In person probably Robin Trower. He was using 2 JCM800s in stereo with the univibe. Eric Johnson's was great too but not as good as Trower's.

On record I've always liked Billy Gibbons sounds. Off the top of my head I'll go for the first album and the solo to "It's only love" on Tejas. EVH on "Women in love" for my best recorded rhythm tone I think.

There are many, but this is always the first that springs to mind…

Gary Moore at the Phil Lynott Tribute - Dublin, 2005. The juiciest, heaviest Les Paul tone...

  • Pretty much anything Warren Haynes does

Also Marc Ford and Luther Dickinson both had some lovely sounds with Black Crowes

Depends on what you're in the mood for. Sometimes it's El Clappo on the Beano EllPee, sometimes it's Andy Latimer on any Camel EllPee, sometimes it's Barney Kessel ... might even be Hank. Picking just one is not possible.

Though there are hundreds, all for different reasons, my first thought was this one - particularly the solo @ 1:42

@babones that second Greg clip is sublime. God knows how many times i have watched that over the years. Makes me want a tweed again, but he also has that cranked to neighbour-threatening volume. And is a genius of course

    Hendrix's clean tone. Obviously...

Always liked this too. Simple but effective.

    Just amazing.

And while I HATE his tone on recordings, Paul Gilbert. I saw him at a clinic in Letchworth a number of years ago and his tone was amazing. He had that full on, in your face distortion that you can only seem to get with a cranked up amp. I have no idea why his recorded tone is horrid.

Also this. In fact, pretty much anything from that performance (Live at Ronnie Scott's)

Too many great tones, but I keep coming back to this.

Sweet and sublime. I love how his playing accentuates the tone so well between 3:37 and 3:43.
