Get a 57 I reckon. It should last forever, and it's pretty much an industry standard. In fact IMO the '58 is better because it handles vocal duties too and (whispers) I think it sounds slightly better on guitar cabs. At least, it does on my cabs for my sounds...

bullet-proof reliability sounds like something I'd go for. If I were to get the Rode m3, it'll double as an acoustic gutiar mic too. anyone gonna offer me one?

Gotta be careful with buying used SM57's. They're are a *LOT* of fakes out there.

I got a fake beta 57 myself from a seller on ebay. If it's a new '57 that's not in line with the general pricing it's probably too good to be true. Second hand it's harder to tell but some things to go on are the weight (in grams, listed on the Shure website) and handling noise/ general sound quality. Weight it with kitchen scales and check the dimensions, I think my fake '57 was about 50g lighter, had bad handling noise and sounded quite bassy and mushy.

Honestly those cheap condensers are usually disappointing to me - bad off axis response and scratchy treble/ peaky midrange though I've not tried the M3. I'd almost rather have a lo-fi dynamic mic recording of an acoustic than a cheap condenser, because at least the dynamic mic isn't trying to be big/accurate/clear sounding - it just sounds earthy and can actually have more sonic attitude.

Audix i5 might also fit the bill if it comes in budget second hand.  I don't like it as much as a 57 on guitar cab but it is cheaper and I don't think there are any fakes on ebay so you should be safe.  Great build quality too.

I'm not selling mine because I like it as a snare mic.

I use an SM7B on guitar cabs and it's fantastic on acoustics too.. They are more expensive tho

It's quite good. Very solid, and sounds decent. THe one I'm using is the T-bone MB-85Beta. Here's a little something I recorded with it..

This is the one thats flat that you can hang over the amp instead of needing it on a stand right?
