I admit they are a bit of an acquired taste, but play and sound good...

.....plus you can pick 'em up cheap 2nd hand due to their marmite looks ;-)

Yeah, the P90 actually has two stacked coils and that knob blends one of the coils in or out like a variable coil split.

ES339 P90 Pro?

Plenty of balls on the bridge and smooth sounding neck.  Can be had for under £300.  I have one and it has great fit and finish, plays nicely and sounds excellent with the 'Pro' pickups.

Me too but I really don't like the Juniors - not glamorous enough.  Melody Makers I don't know enough about to comment but they are cheap I see.

Glamorous? Are you buying to look at or play ?? The sound is what it`s about,you can`t beat basic P90 guitars as JD said !

I would look at the Edwards proper built Japanese quality, sold my Edwards les Paul and regret it now much more bang for yah buck if you not a name snob

It ain't gold and the headstock has been refitted the wrong way round.

This seems to be shrouded in inscrutable oriental mystery, or at least was last time I looked.

Previous research showed that they were machined in their Chinese factory, and probably assembled there, not sure about the painting etc though.  It appeared that they were still finished in Japan, hence the "made in Japan" label, but I do wonder if that is just a QC stage in Japan now.  Do you have any further info or links @BloodEagle ?

Do you know if they are weight relieved at all ?  or just using lighter woods, as they are often around a shoulder friendly 8.5 lbs.

Whatever the case about origin, they really are excellent guitars IMO.

I don't have any other info, basically hearsay and conjecture (and google) I guess. No doubt they are superb guitars though - I had a Les Paul custom-alike and it was fantastic

That's got me worried as i was about to pull the trigger on an Edwards LP and the Japanese made was a factor in that.

thats why I said Japanese quality These days given the right QC China can build. Good guitars. I don't know about the latest ones but my 2004 les Paul standard was astonishingly good for a £500 quid guitar. Nice hardware quality fit and finish. Having spent a day playing Gibsons les Paul's last week you have to wonder how they get away with it. I don't think you will find many actual owners of Edwards slagging them off mine could hold its own sonically and physically against a Gibson. There is no conspiracy they simply use their factory in China to do a lot of the work and fit out in Japan or pass it through QC. Either way they are no bodge job with a Japanese label. Or hold out for an Older Burny Late 80's early 90's if you want all Japan construction again a quality guitar for not much money
