Well I'm stumped. A recent thread I started has ended up with me toying with looking at mustangs. Never considered them before and I think it's because I can't think of who plays them !
There's Byrne from talking heads and ........I don't know ?
Come on folks, enlighten me.

    Kurt Cobain

    Lindsey Troy (Deap Vally)

Adrian Belew (although his were heavily modified)

David Byrne's one was actually a modified Musicmaster.

Lindsey Troy is an interesting player.  Half of me loves it, the other half doesn't.  No doubt she can play that thing though...

Emily Kokal has a red one, but she mostly uses a white Jag I think.

I like the look of the new American special mustang. I love shortscale guitars but make sure their right for you up the dusty end before handing over your cash.

  • The Squier VMs are great - I got my one last August but I do hate the bridge. :( I keep meaning to swap in a TOM and lock it off properly, but until then it's just outright annoying. The trem itself is pretty neat though :)

Theresa Wayman from Warpaint nearly always has a red Mustang on stage, makes some nice sounds with it too

They're great guitars once set-up correctly. We've got a '66 in blue and it's aged nicely as the laquer has yellowed. Lack of sustain means they don't lend themselves to wailing cod-rock heroics, but a couple of bright single coils means they work excellently with pedals and clean Fender amps. They're a really cool left-field choice that isn't loaded-down with rockist baggage. Maybe that's why lots of women play them.

Blixa Bargeld used to play one too.

Add me to the list...a MIJ 65 Reissue.  Cracking guitars.

And don't believe the hype regarding the trem.  Set up properly and strung with 11s/12s they work really, really well.
New fangled trading feedback link right here!

  • I recently traded my RI 69 comp mustang but would have kept it if i didnt have other shortscales.

  • I found this site last night offering replacement control & bridge-plates for all manner of Fenders. Interestingly they have a Mustang hard-tail plate too which I'm tempted to try as it'd be an easy install (although it won't fix the stupid bridge itself, just avoids any potential problems with the vibrato);

  • That looks intresting - wonder if it improves the sustain?

If you're worried about sustain then the Mustang probably isn't the guitar for you. Lack of sustain isn't always a bad thing. That said, there's a new USA Mustang with a TOM and a stoptail bridge and a couple of humbuckers. Not very Mustang-y, but doubtless tons of sustain.

The tuning stability issue isn't really an issue if you don't use the trem. There's no real need to lock the bridge or get an aftermarket hardtail.
