Best Theory Book(s)?

My theory knowledge isn't really very good. Know quite a few scales, what to play them over, but I don't have a good knowledge of chord formation, all the itterations, and what works well together and why. I'm mainly wanting to kn know this so my writing can become far more interesting. Previous toe dips into theory have been to improve my improvisation and soloing, but this time it's more about song construction.

I'm after a book that can explain these things in simple, pratical terms. I know that the interwebz will have everything I need, but I prefer to have a book, as opposed to having to always sit in front of a screen.

Joseph Alexander's books are the clearest and most practical I have ever read. Start with 'The Practical Guide to modern Music Theory for Guitarists' and you will have a rock solid base.

Desi Serna's books and videos are absolutely brilliant. They are so clear and well illustrated with tons of practical song examples so you can put it into context.

I highly recommend both the fretboard theory books. He also has a free podcast for each chapter of his books on itunes which you will find extremely beneficial I am sure.
