If you were advising someone starting an FX collection who wanted to go back to the very source and capture the essence that defines each effect category, what’s your definitive effects pedals list? I'm updating the list as we go; currently it looks like this:

Tuner: Boss TU2
Wah: Dunlop Crybaby
Overdrive: Ibanez Tubescreamer
Distortion: Boss DS1 or ProCo RAT
Fuzz: Fuzzface
Sustain: EHX Big Muff
Phaser: MXR Phase 90 Script 1970s
Compressor: MXR Dyna Comp
Noise gate: ISP Decimator
Chorus: Boss CE1
Flanger: EHX Electric Mistress
Analogue delay: EHX Deluxe Memory Man
Digital delay: Boss DD3
Pitch shifter: Digitech Whammy 1
Ring modulator: Moogerfooger
Harmonizer: Eventide 3000
Reverb: TC Hall of Fame

Correct?
Roland said: Scales are primarily a tool for categorising knowledge, not a rule for what can or cannot be played.
Supportact said: [my style is] probably more an accumulation of limitations and bad habits than a 'style'.

    Flanger - Electric Mistress
    Trem - Tremulator
    Reverb - Hall Of Fame

Above list is about what I would go for but would swap the DS-1 for a Rat.

Not sure what it would be for chorus, delay, flanger, etc.
    Chorus - CE2
    Delay - DMM
    Flanger - ADA

I'm going to update my original post with some suggestions that are indisputable (imo ;) )

You voided your own question with the reverb suggestion.

You cannot possibly disagree with CE1 and suggest the Ce2 in its place.

The CE2 has more provenance, no? And yes, Hall of fame might be too modern but I'm not up on reverb. A spring in the amp might be better.

    Small Clone for the win
The Bigsby was the first successful design of what is now called a whammy bar or tremolo arm, although vibrato is the technically correct term for the musical effect it produces. In standard usage, tremolo is a rapid fluctuation of the volume of a note, while vibrato is a fluctuation in pitch. The origin of this nonstandard usage of the term by electric guitarists is attributed to Leo Fender, who also used the term “vibrato” to refer to what is really a tremolo effect.

I wonder if in some dark corner of the internet the same question is being asked on a thimble forum. Just thinking out loud....

    Hmmmm...

    Fuzzface
    JMI Tonebender mk2
    Tri Muff
    Rams head Muff
    Marshall Supafuzz

    Wait... what was the question?

The CE-1 was designed for keyboards hence the low input impedance and the treble isn't processed properly. It sounds warmer than the CE-2 because it's zapping the top end. I had the pleasure of borrowing one and comparing it to the early period JC-120 I had at the time: the JC-120 absolutely killed the CE-1.

The CE-2 sounds brighter because it's actually designed for guitar inputs. The later period JC-120's with the black corner edge protectors had some chorus circuit evolution and sound more like the CE-2 than the CE-1. All the stuff I've seen of the Smiths on Youtube going back to 1986 shows Johnny Marr was using the later period JC-120 and has been quoted as saying the blue CE-2 was his pedal of choice (there is also evidence that he used the CE-1 when recording the first album). For the Cure, I've seen later period JC-120 and JC-160 amps so a different chorus sound to the CE-1.

So the CE-1 might have been the inspiration but the CE-2 for me is more of the definitive Boss chorus sound.
