What an influential player.  Really enjoying trying out some of his 1970's Aerosmith stuff.  You can get 90% there but that last 10%...its all feel... "Sick as a Dog", etc.

I was put off them as only grew up with their 80's stuff but their 70's output is class.

  • I've only got a best of CD from Aerosmith, which albums would you recommend for the 70s stuff?

    Rocks I guess?

Toys in the Attic and Rocks.

I still find his playing on the original "Walk This Way" amazing.  Boogie Woogie style that I will never nail.  Do you have to be under the influence to be that lose/tight.

Slash has openly said that hearing Rocks for the first time was a revelation for him and it really shows on GnR (Izzy as well as Slash).

    Who influenced Joe Perry then?

£1.99 and £3.99 on Amazon...it'd be rude not to order those wouldn't it?

    Yes.
Although I'm cheating and have been cruising their back catalogue on Spotify all week.

The simple guitar riff at 2:55 onwards does it for me in terms of tone and attitude.

  • Toys and Rocks. Almost anything from their 70's output worth listening to is on those. Very inventive band, those albums aren't out and out Rock by any means with splashes of blues and psychedelia. Their music was a collision of Steve's Beatles influence and Joe's blues boom ones.

+1.  That sums it up.  Alot of fun Blues riff's there.  Intro to Sick as a Dog is a great two guitar thing.

Went downhill with MTV and MOR rock generation IMO.

Just tried to Listen to Pump again and it's like a different band is playing.

Guitars are lost in the mix with the big 80's drums, etc.

    Anyone read this?

  • TITA and rocks agreed. Also debut and Get your wings. Live bootleg is a great live album. Night in the ruts is underrated and worth a listen. Draw the line not that good. Also Rock in a hard place is a good album. Made when Perry and Whitford had left but some good stuff on that.

Amazing how much GnR owe to these guys. Even Axl borrowed some moves.

Big fan of this period of the band. Sweet Emotion and No More No More are fantastic - killer outro solo on the latter. I've got a lovely vrip of Rocks which reveals all manner of layers - there's not a bad one on this imo but I'll pick out Sick as a Dog and Lick and a Promise as personal favourites.

Just revisiting this.... Any hints at what gear was used to get the rhythm tone on Sweet Emotion and Sick as a Dog.  I think it's Whitford's playing and tone that really grabs me.

The chap who has done the transcriptions for the German Gitarre & Bass for the last 30 years, Wolfgang Kehle, said something along the lines of Joe Perry having the best microtiming of any guitarist he has transcribed (which is just about everyone), making the job extremely difficult.

I ought to listen to some Aerosmith, never really explored the band.

He'd be nothing without Brad Whitford to float over though...

I agree, Whitford doesn't get enough credit.

Sweet Emotion sounds like nothing else from the 70s way ahead of its time

Yes, it's aged well. Was having a go at it tonight and just can't nail that timing!
