Completely want one. Pref a 1958 Reissue, but silly expensive But what I really want is one of the smaller bodied split headstock Futura models they issued in 2002. Ooosha.

I wonder how much John Gill would charge for a build.....

I dream of an Explorer with a dark-ish, oiled finish showing nice mahogany grain, aged nickel hardware and cream plate.  It'd have to be a custom build, though, I guess.  Korina or a standard natural would be my second choices.

Don't know where the OP is but there's a cherry one down in Ashford (about an hour from me) on ebay.  No bids at £650 (yet) though as couple of offers.  I'm sort of tempted, but probably not tempted enough.

I'm all about the 76 style myself. That said, the only Explorer I've ever had was a Gothic one with widdly neck and hilarious ceramic pickups...

What's the general consensus on Epi Explorers? I had a MIC Tokai and it played nicely but had some duff finishing.  There were also some MIJ Tokai's but they're few and far between.

  • All the epi explorers I've tried have been balls. That said, they only number 2, so it may be statistical error.

I had an Epi explorer for a bit. The neck was a bit too chunky for me and it didn't have loads of sustain, but the main weak point was the electronics - the pickups were a bit poo and fed back easily.

My main guitar is an '07 cherry gibson explorer, the ceramic pickups were gash so were replaced by SD alnico IIs, much better. The neck feels good, sustain fine and it's a very resonant guitar which feels great in my hands. The finish hasn't survived 5 years of gigging that well but frankly when it plays well I don't care.
