What's Hot

Where can I go on holiday? Years ago, it was easy. You bought a package job, and went to the Costa Brava to fry on the beach for two weeks, all the while complaining about the foreign food, and the fact that no-one spoke English.

These days, the world is your oyster: In less than a day you could be anywhere on the planet, which, assuming you've got the wonga, makes deciding where to go far more difficult than ever before. I like Florida, but as I've been several times now, but wonder if it's time for a change.

Travel agents round here are populated by young chav birds who think that clubbing in Ibiza, getting pissed rotten every night, and shagged senseless by anything that's got two arms two legs and a cock that still works, is holiday heaven, so I thought I'd turn to the most knowledgable, seasoned travellers to ask for suggestions (that's you lot, in case you hadn't yet cottoned on).

I had wondered about trying the west coast of the States, but remain open to suggestions, so you off go, give it your best shot!

I think the east coast would suit you better.  Northish, Eastish.

  • I will overcome my hatred of the air travel industry only when someone invents the totally silent, invisible, and non-polluting aircraft. However, should this happen, then I should like to go to the USA, buy a motorbike, and ride it from the east coat to the west coast.

I like wild open spaces, of which there are some in Scotland, and the islands around it, and more in Scandinavia. Those are places you can get to without flying.

  • I've got a few suggestions other than the USA, but it depends what time of year you want to and obviously how much you are willing to Fork out.

    Mexico
    Seychelles
    Tahiti
    Maldives

Or you could go and see something awesome like

    Angel Falls

Temples in Cambodia(What's it called now)?

    Goa in India
    Norwegian Fjords Cruise?

Some food for thought there I hope.

  • Brother-in-law did a road trip this summer.  New Orleans - New York over a three week period.  Stopped at a lot of out of the way non- touristy places, and spent a few days in the Smokey Mountains before a weekend in New York.  Loved it and can't wait to go back.

Several questions you need to have worked out your answers to:

What kind of thing do you want to do?
Do you want to stay in one place or travel around?
How long do you want to be away for?
    What time of year?
What's your limit on flying time?
    What's your budget?

I've done a lot of "adventure" travel in the last 13-14 years with companies doing organised tours. I've rarely had anything less than a great time, and I've been to some amazing places and seen some amazing sights, and it can cost less than you'd think.

I did think of a couple more so might as well add them.

    Lake Geneva

There some lovely scenic places along the Rhine as well.

Best holiday I ever had was flying to San Francisco, hiring a car, driving through Yosemite and Death Valley to Vegas, the on through the Mojave and Joshua Tree national park to LA.

Pre- kids. Stayed in motels. Booked nothing except flights. It was like being in my own road movie. I was Nicolas Cage, Mrs Chuff was Laura Dern.

    Blimey! Lots of suggestions!

You know it's odd, when I was younger, if you gave me a sunny beach, I'd be perfectly capable, and happy, to lie in the sun and drink beer without moving for the duration. Now, I feel I need a lot more mental stimulation in the form of local culture, history, and natural wonders. As an example I went to Canada and America years ago, and just before I went into Toronto airport for the flight home, I stopped off to see Niagara Falls. It plain took my breath away, anything else I'd seen or experienced in the previous couple of weeks paled into insignificance.

Mrs C fancies going to Hawaii, to see Pearl Harbor, but the flights are a killer, it's simply too far. She won't go anywhere where she might be bothered by beggars, anywhere she considers less civilised, unclean, or that has larger spiders than Margate.

I did contemplate going to Australia, but the last time we were there, the poxy flies were such a pain, and again the flights are too long for an old fart like me. New Zealand appeals, but again it's the flights. .

@chuffola That's a very interesting scenario, and I might just investigate it, although I'd also quite like some time lying on a beach as well. Maybe a hotel for a few days with a pool would suffice

@Oct - Are the Maldives likely to disappear in 2014? I hope so because the bloke 3 doors down from me is going there next year, and to be honest he's a gobshite bullshitter of the highest order, so the thought of him stood on a slowly sinking island has a certain appeal.

@bellycaster - Indian Ocean islands, hmmm...they do look nice, but I wonder if I'd get bored doing nothing?

The search continues, and thanks for the input, keep it coming!

That's what Vegas is for!  Hotel on the Strip, casino for nighttime, pool an 100 degree dry desert sun for daytime.

Yosemite, Hoover Dam, Grand Canyon, Mojave Desert - more natural sights than you can shake a stick at. Plus SF and LA for culture / Alcatraz / Hollywood / Rodeo Drive, Venice Beach.

And it can all be done comfortably in 2/3 weeks.

    Take me with you!

I'm starting to like the sound of this one. Any chance it can be comfortably done in a couple of weeks? I quite fancy a week, or at least a few days, in New York on the way home.

I'd take you, but I suspect you'd never keep up with Mrs C's blisteringly-swift G&T consumption.

Were I on my own, yes, I'd be as keen as fuck. But Mrs C is not fussed, as previously explained.
