It's a small one, you can get any size, that one would be good for mic'ing cabs

Yeah I know. Wonderful tech for the common man I have to say. Really surprised to see it on eBay, I'd have thought such a specialised piece of kit would've found a buyer by word of mouth.

I've seen a few on there over the last 2 years since I heard about them, usually around half new price

It'll be egg boxes glued to the walls for me I fear.

There was an interesting TV article I saw this year about the quietest (scientifically) room in existence. All v clever internal construction, pointy out bits of cardboard and such, obviously completely different in the intent to your post. Apparently if you were in the room/chamber for any noteable length of time you'd start to feel nauseous. Twas quite intriguing.

I went in an anechoic chamber for a bit. Best one in the UK I heard of is at Salford Uni

Is that what they're called? Can hear the blood coursing thru your veins apparently.

I studied there, and yes, the acoustics facilities are amazing. There's a difference between 'anechoic' and 'soundproof', mind - the former just means absorbant surfaces everywhere to totally kill off any room reflections (useful for performing critical measurments on equipment without interference from room frequency cancellation / reinforcement), the latter means preventing sound from getting in or out and is acheived (usually) with the 'room-within-a-room' methods exemplifed by the isolation booth in the OP.

Anechoic rooms are often soundproof, but not the other way around - they sound VERY unnatural and aren't favoured for recording in, hence most soundproof rooms will still have some reflective surfaces to make them not sound weird.

  • The Esmono rooms are pretty good, I installed about 6 when I worked at Leeds Uni and Bretton Hall. They don't sound that great and make you work hard to get good results when working with acoustic instruments as they are by design very dry.

They're dry enough to be a bit fatiguing over long periods and they get as hot as Hades. Although good soundproofing does always equal good heat insulation! The money in high end studios is often in the air handling systems.

If you've got the time you can DIY a better space for much less cash.
