In Praise of the Clavinet

Can't remember if I've done this one.

I went for years thinking some sounds I heard in songs were weirdly EQ'ed Bass Guitars or Guitars.

Turned out I was wrong and was hearing a Clav. These bloody things are everywhere in tons of songs.

What a great instrument, no wonder I couldn't get the Superstition "Tone".

I'm going to have to study the "workings" of them as they sound like guitars sometimes.

    I loves me some clav.

    Internally it's quite like a cross between a dulcimer and an electric guitar so it's probably not surprising it sounds that way.

  • Nice one @johnnyurq.

    You have a Guitar Synth? Tell me more of how I can get this Clav sound from an axe? Can it be done with a pog type pedal n all or does yer need a Guitar Synth job lot type thingy?

    @Bellycaster

    I have had a few over the years and my current squeeze is a Roland GR-55.

    You can layer two clavs and detune one for the hoot and many other manglings.

    I use a Tele with an internal GK3 fitted by Barry the tech at Gig Gear (Machine Head before that) who made a fantastic job of it, also I fitted an external GK3 on my JTV-59 and my Strat too.

    The only guitary shaped thing that would let you play a clav and others would be the YouRock Gen II, not great to play but has the good grace to be cheapish.

    Better to fit an external GK3 if you fancy getting into it though, it is not difficult or damaging to the guitar if you use the tune o matic mounting kit or similar for a Strat type. There is a humbucker mount for superstrats and any guitar with a humbucker in the bridge.
