Birelli Lagrene

Last night at Ronnie Scott's - awesome.

Not a Gypsy Jazz concert, his modern quartet.

He played what looked like a Pacifica 311, with a H/B P90 in the bridge - huge sound through a Twin and a Supersonic.  Fantastic noise and a technical tour-de-force.

Played in the style of Larry Carlton, Jeff Beck, Mike Stern, shredders (dive bombs & sweep-picking all over the place), stupendous !
Imagine something sharp and witty here ......

I had to audition for a band where they said they would be playing "The Chicken" on the web the first version I found was the Birelli Lagrene version.

I was shitting myself, but it turns out it was the Jaco version.

  • I have an album Birelli recorded when he was about 12 and used to have a copy of his album with Jaco (hence his covering The Chicken I suppose). Long lost track of what he was up to but hugely proficient player, I'm sure he was great.

Birelli is an absolute monster, but only guitarists ever seem to have heard of him. Effortless bass player too. AND he can sing! Check out his Blue Eyes album.

The 311 had some sort of modified trem too.  All shiny chrome.

    I want a P90 guitar again !!!!!!!!! :))

Wow, that's a huge departure from what I remember of his style many moons ago. Like ETW, I recall seeing him when he was a teenager - IIRC, a programme about the annual Django festival - he was phenomenal.
