    Looking good though :)
Ha, yeah! If Orville is watching, this is just a stage prop, ok!

@WezV - yes a veneer is a good idea. That also leads into my next challenge - bridging the bottom of the truss rod cavity so I can use a 2-screw TRC.

A reasonably substantial veneer could aid this maybe?

Just use a long screw with a spacer washer?
    Never Ever Bloody Anything Ever.

  • I suggest you don't bridge it, just attach the a piece of the same veneer that fits snugly into the truss rod cavity to the back of the cover and add a dummy screw to the bottom end.

The TRC is fixed by a single screw at the top but can't slip as it's held in place at the other end.

Orville is only a stage prop himself!

it could, but try not to make the overall thickness too much. i would go standard veneer thickness (0.5mm) on the back (mahogany type)   and structural veneer(1.5mm) on the front (holly, maple, sycamore).   if that extra 2mm is too much for your tuners then you will need to thin the headstock face first but in most cases it should be fine

glue in a small block of wood as the bridge over the truss rod cavity before veneering

I've done some sanding and filing (or 'rasping', if you're a pendant ;) ) on the headstock to help the new chunk merge with the rest.

I've also reamed the tuner holes out to 10mm to take the Rotomatics.

@WezV - if I were to go down the veneers route, do you recommend a supplier? I've had a quick look on eBay and Amazon, and there are some out there, but any secret suggestions? Do I get stuff with adhesive already applied/iron on?

    Many thanks

you don't need much at all.  i would offer to send a couple of headstock sized pieces but my workshop is currently packed up in storage so i don't have access to it

I have only ever used normal plain wood veneers so can't comment on iron on ones

try ebay for small amounts, like these samples

    Nice job!
so if you fancy a reissue of a guitar they never made in a colour they never used then it probably isn't too overpriced.

Little bridge bit glued in now, so I can use a 2 screw TRC.

Plus I can still adjust the truss rod which is a bonus!

@GuitarMonkey is VERY kindly sending me some veneer which will cover the whole thing.

Sorry for the hiatus, my laptop has stopped working, but I'm here via android.

    So... welcome to headstock week!

The veneer kindly donated by GuitarMonkey arrived safe and sound.

    Veneers on :

I hadn't noticed before now but the headstock is on the piss a bit. Look at the curves either side of the truss rod cavity running from the sides of the nut up to the corners below the 2 e-string tuners. Totally lopsided! Ah well.

Here's the back with a bit of stain on it:

Ps, when I paste 'direct' links from photobucket, I see the image itself in the post on my laptop, but only the link text when viewing the forum on android, what's that about?
