good smooth and fat OD-distortion pedal?

What's Hot
CatthanCatthan Frets: 357
Hi all, i'm after a fat, smooth and sustainy OD. I love my pinnacle but there's little room between a piercing EVH tone and woman tone if i roll of the tone knob. if i add gain and roll off the highs it gets muddy plus there's more drive than i need and i have to try to control feedback and noise. I am really liking the dirty channel of the lonestar special MB amp and I''m trying to move my badger to get one but otherwise the badger is really lovely so i'm looking at pedal possibilities too. Don't care about transparency etc, i actually think i need to colour my tone for this. Please let me know of any options. Thanks

I does like a Bad Monkey into a dirty valve (Marshall) amp, less so into a solid state.

    Things to consider

how much extra gain do you want

how much extra volume do you want

is the pedal just for a volume boost

what sounds do I really want

I also like the MXR Zakk Wylde as a boost for gain and volume, whereas a bad monkey for more gain.

For a pure volume boost I like an MXR Micro Amp in the F/X loop of the Marshall

  • Duncan powergrid!

Crazy fat. The pgs demo is a bit rubbish, but Duncan have their own with it in a band mix and boy, it's fat.

    Regret losing mine.

Hi T, another +1 for the Zendrive and I've had the boutique stuff like Landgraff, Xotics AC, BB and RC, Liquid Sunshine, some Keeley stuff as well as the usual Boss etc..and the Hermida trumps the lot of them and it's just wonderful for the sort of thing you're after. Even in the lower gain registers, the sustain, fullness and smoothness are all there and I think it's the Voice knob that makes a difference. I'll try and get some clips to you.
Alternatively, look at adding an Xotic EP Booster to the Badger. Inherent tone stays the same but just more pushed and thicker.

  • +1 for the Xotic BB (and variants) and AC. Both very smooth - the BB is higher gain and slightly more 'edgy'-voiced.

    Cheers guys,

the zen and the ac might be what I need indeed.
Another clue, I'm looking for a fusion-y lead tone.

  • Having no idea how much you want to spend, I'll suggest this...

I've just ordered one myself from Canada. The video demo is impressive, as are some of the other pedals.

Carl Martin Plexitone. Pete Thorn's demo uses it with a Badger for some parts. Or a Wampler Sovereign. Very versatile indeed.

Plimsoul is very smooth with lots of gain and would be my pick.

The shredmaster is very fat and not as metal as you might think.

  • @fretmeister. I'll second the Carl Martin Plexitone pedal, Pete Thorn's demo shows it to be a fantastic sounding pedal through the Badger. It was on my shortlist, and I will get one if the Jouster doesn't impress.

I haven't tried a Wampler Dual Fusion but is that the sort of thing you're after as there's one on the classifieds?

It could be, I m trying to get a hold of a boogie LSS, if not I ll see if I can sell my pinnacle and then fusion drive is a strong possibility too

I'd agree with the zendrive suggestions.   Since buying the evh amp and switching back to amp drive, it's the one pedal I still use a lot.  I'm not sure how the new (lovepedal made) versions compare to the older ones though.   I can't imagine getting rid of mine unless I swap it for a lazy J cruiser that keeps tempting me.
