Brand New Heavies - Sometimes with one guitar

A band I have just taken up with want to do this Brand New Heavies Song

Not a huge problem, except that there's just one guitar and one bass. I'm the guitar, and the arrangement is troubling me.

I'm currently playing picked out FDCD, then FGCD with the top end of a G chord (GDG) on the high strings. It kind of works, but sounds a bit ropey. Thinking I should maybe leave the bottom notes to the bass and just drone something over the top (kind of like Massive Attack do on teardrop).

The problem seems to be that you can pretty much play anything over this, and it will fit.

Anyone ever done this one with such a small setup?

Any ideas?

Or do I have to resign myself to it always sounding a bit crap without keys?

Thanks, that's rather more interesting than what i was doing. Can work it in for variation here and there.
