  • Imposssible to choose a real "best".

But, these 2 come pretty close.

Steely Dan - Bodhisattva,  absolutely incredible guitar work.

    Isolated Guitars in this un.

    Focus - Hocus Pocus

Steely Dan - Bodhisattva,  absolutely incredible guitar work.

I love that track! Tried to learn it years ago. I have a backing track now somewhere, I should try it again

    Nice one @axisus

Don't forget in my post there is the Isolated Guitar tracks for that song if you want to listen. I learned the rhythm parts and intro solo yesterday, but I know I need to improve vastly to learn and play the main guitar solo and speedy bits, I just thought "right, maybe later",lol. Some of it is waaaaay too nimble for my fingers.

Effing great song though ain't it?

I'd go for something which is technically great but also really memorable...

I don't know what The One Song is, but here are some thoughts I've had about it:

The Hellecasters - The Beak/The Claw
Gary Moore - Still Got the Blues
Lindsey Buckingham's live, solo acoustic version of "Big Love" from the 90s
Dire Straits - Sultans of Swing, or perhaps Tunnel of Love
Patto's "See You at the Dance Tonight" - hardly iconic but there's some truly awe-inspiring playing.
Something by Extreme? Perhaps Decadence Dance, or maybe Cupid's Dead. Or Hole Hearted... I could go on. I love Nuno.
Whoever suggested "For the Love of God" (Viz?) was definitely speaking sense. Remains one of the reasons I play guitar, and there are probably thousands of others out there with a similar view.

Actually, some of David Lee Roth's solo stuff may be a good shout - the stuff with Vai or Becker playing. Awesome rhythm and lead playing, and really good songs which stick in my head for ages - songs which would be so much worse without those guitar parts.

Ooooh, another idea - "Eastwood" by Brad Paisley. Fucking wow.
Another Brad Paisley tune - "Start a Band".
Obviously there's some great Hendrix stuff, my favourite being "All Along the Watchtower"
Maybe SRV? "Pride and Joy" or "Texas Flood"... or "Couldn't Stand the Weather", brilliant tune.
Something by Paul Gilbert? "Bultaco Saturno" perhaps, catchy as fuck and with some blazing solos...
Then there's "Paranoid Android" or "Subterranean Homesick Alien" by Radiohead...

Fuck, wait a sec - "Hangar 18" by Megadeth. Or "Master of Puppets" by Metallica?

I'd also put forward Queen, but IMO this hypothetical song we're searching for should be predominantly guitar based, and most of Queen's best-known (and my favourite) stuff is really led by the piano. Loads of astonishing guitar parts in their stuff though, that goes without saying.

"Killing in the Name" by RATM, possibly...
"Cherub Rock" by the Smashing Pumpkins is one of my all-time favourite songs to play along to, which I think is also an important facet of this (for me anyway)...
"Ice Cream Man" by Van Halen... that's awesome.
Someone suggested Steely Dan - what about "Kid Charlemagne"?
"Holiday in Cambodia" by the Dead Kennedys is really cool and great fun, but I don't know if it's The Greatest...

I dunno. I've suggested loads and loads of stuff but I'm no closer to deciding on a single one. I doubt I ever could.

Little wing, but played better by SRV.

The Audience is Listening by Vai, or Thin Lizzys Black Rose if lyrics are compulsory.

    Controversial!

  • Voodoo Chile (slight return). Great tune with kitchen sink solos. Still does it for me.

Of the top of me head......

    Sweet Child O Mine

    Reeling in the years

Both songs stand up on there own but also have classic, memorable guitar parts integral to the track.
