Fender Jazz Bass 1960 Circa

Hello, Sorry but I am pretty new to this and I am really posting in behalf of my dad.

My dad is still the proud owner of the mentioned guitar which he used whilst in a band in the 60's playing along with many bands that have since been massive- The Who and Pink Floyd are the ones he fondly tells us about!! He also used it to tour Germany and Scotland many times and he has some great stories about it.

He is pushing 70 now and it has been under the bed in the same case for years now and he has decided to all it- one last time to enjoy it he says; if not its being buried with him.

We are at a lose on how to start it off trying to sell it. I have been in touch with a few stores in Glasgow to try and get an exact year and a rough price. Anybody with knowledge have any suggestions how we can approach a sale and get a fair price for my dad?

Thanks

Have you already tried Strung Out Guitars? If not please do! (King St - east of the St. Enoch's and south of Glasgow Cross and Guitar Guitar.) Possibly on a Thursday when I'm in there, but if I'm not then the other staff will know what to look for and how to advise you. We specialise in vintage instruments.

Dating an old Fender is easy if it's all-original, which of course also has a big effect on the value. We can advise on the price, and inmost cases would sell it for you on commission - it's unlikely to be a quick sale because it will be an expensive instrument, but we can almost certainly get you a better price - even after the commission is taken off - than selling it on Ebay or wherever. We have a long list of clients you will have heard of too, so we may already know the sort of buyer you need for something like this.

Sadly I can tell you already that I can't afford it myself if it's even remotely close to original and in good condition, and much as I would love to make you a silly offer, I won't :).

Hi- I haven't yet- my dad took it into a shop today and they thought it was a 1963. What commission would you charge for the sell? I have placed a classified on here just now. Next time he is in town I will tell him to stop in. We were told a bit of cleaning would all that's needed

We base the commission more on getting an agreed price for the seller rather than a fixed percentage - that gives a bit of flexibility with haggling customers (this is Glasgow ;) ).

I certainly wouldn't sell it privately without a proper appraisal from an expert - not necessarily us! At best you will probably get lowball offers that you don't have enough information to know are good or not.

Getting an accurate guarantee of the originality - even if you think it hasn't been touched since it was new - is key to getting the best price nowadays.
