Er ... think of a heavy thing ... got it? Right, now think of something that makes that feel like a feather! The popularity of Doom Metal and it's derivatives made me go into mad professor mode and design a pickup that could out sludge a really really sludgy thing! The average for pickups in this genre is about 22k ... powered by alnico 5 or ceramic magnets ... well at Oil City we don't do wussy stuff like that, we got a 22k pair of coils, triple potted them, then mounted them on top of an alnico 8 magnet ... THEN we flanked that magnet with two powerful ceramic magnets! The resistance is irrelevant with this beast ... in fact resistance is futile! The neck pickup is a little more sedate at 17.5k single alnico 8!

I, for one, look forward to the first 1M pickup.

Lol ... to be honest there is very little point in going beyond 22k with conventional winding techniques the power doesn't really go up, you are simply loading more wire and resistance for little effect. The power of the H.A.L and the Void comes from a carefully designed multi magnet array, as field strength is the other main variable next to turn count, and the area where too little innovation seems to be done.

    What's the output like, volts-wise?

Also I think my last post may have read a bit mean-dismissive, and it wasn't meant that way at all. Just to be clear.

That's okay mate, we have been waiting to get the first playing clips sorted before measuring/publishing the volts/inductance. will probably do that next week. It's F-----G loud ... is the first response :-)

I probably say this in total ignorance, but my impression was that a lot of stoner/doom/sludge metal is played with pretty standard low output pickups, but through heavily overdriven amps?

There has been a move in the ever more popular new wave of this genre to use pickups specifically designed for those tones: the BK Warpig and Pig 90, The Seymour Duncan 'Slug' ...
As @WezV Points out Iommi's original Magnum was also a super powerful pickup.
So no that's not strictly true.

There are lots of ways to generate those tones, but a pickup designed for low tuning will give a player a head start. Also as with all Oil City pickups, string definition was an important factor: no point in those doom laden chords and devil's intervals if you can't hear them.

Can you give some specific examples of bands and sounds you have in mind with this pickup?

I've a feeling you might be aiming this at the wrong crowd with all the best intentions :-)

I have to agree here - I play doom stuff with an Epiphone Casino and heaps of fuzz. Not really an amp sound.

Not that you couldn't use these pickups to do a similar thing...

As mentioned, most 'doom' or 'stoner' bands use lowish output /paf style humbuckers - high output pickups are more suited to an entirely different type of metal band

This may be in BKP Warpigs' ballpark, which have been used in all kinds of metal and even jazz.

Not my first choice in a big mahogany lump, but would like to try this in anything lighter (SG, tele, strat, etc).

Maybe a second pickguard for my SSS strat...

Interesting the controversy this pickup has stirred up. There are definitely two approaches to producing the sounds we are talking about here, the low /medium output approaches can be exemplified by revivalist bands like Kadavar, Graveyard or Blues Pills, and I already produce plenty of low to medium output pickups for that route. The other 'high output approach could be exemplified by Matt Pike and his use of Lace 'Dirty Hesher' pickups.
Seymour Duncan has developed the custom shop 'Slug', for which you will see he has specifically mentioned doom and stoner metal players as his target market.
Bare Knuckle produce the Warpig (21k)and the Pig 90, and my own Void 22k P90 has already been selling well in that market too.

At Oil City we try to provide well engineered alternatives to more mainstream brands in all genres and with all approaches, and we will certainly not be leaving out customers who want to take the high output route.
The answer is simple, pick your pickup according to your kit and preferred method of getting the job done ... we will have a pickup waiting for you.
