Question: Favourite (or despised) musical clichés?

Was bored looking around (and trying not to do anything useful) ... couldn't actually find much meat.

Anyway, do you have any favourite musical clichés?

Half of the reason I'm asking is that I can't find any good ones.

    Rhyming "crazy" with "baby".

    Never gets old.

A despised one is that semi tone modulation used towards the end of ballads to give them a 'lift'.

Apart from in New York New York where it's sublime :)

The descending bass and/or chord voicing thing.  It's been used so much in so much music that it feels like it should sound formulaic, but inventive writers keep coming up with new ways of presenting or semi-disguising it.  It's there in so much of my favourite music.

'The lick"- brilliant video. So good John Coltrane used it twice it seems.

The one I try to avoid is that beloved of all bedroom guitarists starting out playing solos, going down the neck on one string in that 'diddly-diddly-dee' sort of way. This kind of thing at around 52 secs.

I also dislike the Gary Barlow composition method, which consists of writing a three minute song that has a catchy chorus sandwiched between unmemorable verses.

Im starting to really dislike the modern fusion type of thing cos everybody is starting to sound the same and use that slide thingy on most notes that Greg Howe started doing in the 80s...

You mean that exagerated vibrato by sliding up and down 4-5 frets?

Yes - it's great done sparingly if the song is really fast and exciting, but it's such a specific sound that you start almost dreading it with some players. Not Greg Howe - I think he uses it well.

Greg Howe does it at around 12 secs here. This is an absolutely amazing bit of guitar playing from start to finish. Look how effortlessly he plays and switches between chords. And the 'fast bit' near the end is just wicked.
