Dammit! I gotta lose weight. I should be able to run faster if I can shift the excess fat. I want to get around in 22 mins for a start, then if I can do that I want to dip under 20. A bit ambitious maybe at my age but then I am pretty competitive. Won't happen unless I shift a stone and a half though (which I've been trying to do for a decade!). Game face on .....

After a few months of training I have my PB at 22:30, started at 30 mins.
Dropping a bit of weight will help but I know a guy who is 19st who regularly does sub 20 min times.

I genuinely can't comprehend how anyone gets under 20 minutes. I did a 5k in Blackpool last night. Pancake flat except for one hill in the middle and managed to get back in just under 25 minutes. A few years ago I managed 22ish and that was me at absolute full tilt. I think Im built for comfort not speed though
    How very rock and roll

30 years ago I used to run 5k at about 17mins

it helped that I was 9 stone, with not an ounce of fat on me plus a metabolism which could digest any food and generate energy at an efficiency rate that any energy company would give both of their testacles for

Can't remember any 5k times from when I ran last but my best on a 2.4k course was 9:14. I really want to start running again.

I "run" 5k in about 40 minutes. I'm gonna start it again soon.

The last time I tried to run 5k I did it in 34 mins, that was like 5 years ago and on a treadmill. I've recently started running again but on the road, with incline and decline (which I walk as they are not great for the joints especially downhill), I started with 2 miles run and can do it in 24 mins, which is 3.2km.

  • Nice job! I used to parkrun all the time a few years ago. I was always hoping to parkrun with my dog but he's much happier running off the lead than on it (which is compulsory at my park run), so I'd rather not force him if he doesn't enjoy it. Sadly the timing of the park run is a bit too close to morning walk to have a chance to walk him then get to the start line, short of getting up far too early on a Saturday!

its a lot of fun though and a good community though. Maybe I'll make a special effort to give it another go soon, hopefully to set a PB! I have a 5k route that I do every week or two (I always find it good to mix up my running routes otherwise I get bored!) and I can do it quicker than my old parkrun PB...

A bit annoying/frustrating, I was getting bad cramps in my calf muscle all evening and night time. Always worrying as that was my 'blood clot' leg a couple of years ago. Looks like a layoff from running for a bit ...... hopefully not a big problem.
Not sounding too good :( just spoke to my GP and he wants me to go to hospital and get checked for a blood clot. Depressing.

I used to, I've got my "50" t-shirt but I haven't been for a while. I'm hoping to get back into it though. I was a runner before I started, but still I went from 25 minutes to 20 and a half over the course of a few years.

I hope the leg isn't a problem, @axisus. I have a slightly dodgy hip which I'm hoping will clear up or at least stay in the background enough for me to train for a half marathon next March.

Well after a week of painful stomach injections as they thought I might have a blood clot, in the end it wasn't. That was a BIG relief but something weird happened and it wasn't nice. Anyway, I skipped last week but I'm heading off again in half an hour for Park Run no 2. Fingers crossed that it will be OK this time, the plan is to go slower ...

Yay! smashed my 5k Parkrun best with 23.50. Progress!

I thought I was going to throw up at the end, but that's usual for me in race mode. On the down side, I have had a dodgy knee for a couple of days so probably time for a lay off. hopefully nothing too serious.

I'm fat and have a bad diet, but I did have a good diet and was slimmer. This is actually firing me up to get back into it.

Not this weekend, as I'm actually socialising for the first time in a  while, but maybe next week I'll try running again.

23.03. I wasn't going to take it that seriously as I had a hard 5K on Thursday, but it went well. Bit annoyed that I didn't dip under 23 mins, I would have if I'd have known I was close.

23:03 is good going. Well done indeed.  I think that's pretty much my pb.

I did my first one in a while this morning. Just happy to jog round after 3 months off post a heart op.   28:15.  Heart is good so with a little more training I`m still aiming to get down to 21.
    Long run tomorrow.  Onwards!
