WTB Bass Guitar advice needed

capo4thcapo4th Frets: 4437
I bagged a nice sounding Ampeg Bass combo amp for peanuts and want to buy a nice bass to go with it. I don't want to buy twice so what would people suggest £500-1000 budget new used Jazz bass type guitar. Thanks in advance.

Boringly, a MIM Fender Jazz bass, nothing fancy, in a decent colour like 3 tone sunburst with tort pickguard and rosewood neck. Classic, for good reason.

That's what I was thinking how is the build quality playability on the Mexican basses?

I quite liked the look of that MIM Fender Flea sig in shell pink.

  • That budget gets you a USA Fender second hand.

Failing that, I would also check out the offerings from G&L.

  • the Jazz and Precision basses are just about the simplest instruments in all of guitar land.

MIM Fenders are perfectly fine, even if the prices are now starting to increase by a piss taking amount.

  • If you are not a brand snob:
    SGC Nanyo  Bass collection

    these appear for £150-£300
Japanese made, the active one is good - I got one from Germany
    US Fender quality

  • Lakland or MIJ/US Jazz.

  • The current spec Fender US Standards are well worth looking at. Nothing needs changing, hardware and pickups are all good quality. I think the spec started in 2012, so there should be plenty on the used market by now

Seconded in spades. I got a 310  active for £62!! Its awesome, it really is. Fantastic neck, hugely versatile and built so well.

  • I tried a bunch of Fender MIM jazz and precisions a while ago with my son and the build quality seemed variable, quite disappointing.
The bassist in my old band had a Squier VM Jazz that he was very pleased with, used it in preference to some £1k basses gathering dust. IIRC he upgraded the bridge but that was all.
The Marcus Miller basses on thomann get a lot of love but, new, you'd have to buy sight unseen and they have, obviously, gone up in price in recent weeks.

Yamaha. I tried a few and they felt/sounded good to great. Not mainstream shape wise...

I haven't tried them myself so this isn't a recommendation, but I thought I'd just point out that since this thread is a few months old, some of the advice is a bit out of date- they've been blowing out the USA Fender Standard series instruments (both guitars and basses) as they've apparently been discontinued and you could probably get a new USA standard Jazz or Precision for £1000 (or slightly more) now.

Just in case you hadn't noticed.

No problem- most of the bigger stores (andertons, richtone, guitarguitar, dawsons and probably some more) seem to be in on it.

  • I have two Fender Squire Vintage Modified Jazzes.  I think they are now about £350 new.  Like one of the above has said, much prefer over the Mexican Fender.  In fact, I preferred mine over my old USA Deluxe Jazz!  I have a spare one if you were interested.  It's the FSR (Fender Special Run) in sunburst.  Selling it for £220 with hard case.
