Transposing up!

So - I've landed a rhythm guitar slot in fairly prominent local function band

wiyj that comes some standard function band bores - thevye lobbed me a set list where most of why they do is as the record but then I get a message like this.....

"Sweet Child Of Mine Guns 'N' Roses - not sure of the key, but it's the
same as the record and Our lead guitar doesn't tune down half a step"

So all of appetite is in Eb iirc so what does he mean!!!

Probably means that he doesn't play any open strings

Not clear from that at all so ask if they're playing it in E or Eb. The lead guy could easily be playing it in Eb but tuned standard by avoiding open strings, but that's not so easy with the rhythm.

I think that's the way I've read it mate.

so given I've no musical theory knowledge and play entirely by ear, how the hell do I play it in Eb but stay in standard tuning !!!

Capo on first fret, D chord becomes Eb.

By substituting all the open chords for barre chords, then playing everything a semitone lower, ie one fret down from where you'd play it if it were in E.

I'd read that as playing it in standard tuning, but the same chords as the record -  verse D C G etc
